I haven't played in a month and I'm dreading the 4 months before it gets warm enough in NY to play again. I priced out a 2 day, 3 night trip to Texas in January:

$230 airfare
$200 for 3 nights in a hotel
$100 car rental
$70 travel case for my clubs (I had wanted one of these anyway)
$100 for 2 greens fees

Is $700 too much to spend for 2 days of golf? Is there any way I can do this cheaper? This wouldn't replace my spring/summer trip I usually do with my friends, but that trip is about 50/50 golf/vacation with friends, whereas this is 100% golf.

Make sure you account for bag fees for your clubs. I don't know what airline you will be flying but the cheapest base price doesn't always end up being the cheapest total price. Also while you are spending some money you might what to play a round at a high end course it won't affect your total trip price that much. If you can afford it I say go for it.

"Is it crazy to fly south in January for golf"? I think it would be crazier to stay and endure the NE winter without taking a break! Think of it this way - only part of the cost is really for golf, the rest is actually for mental health maintenance by having a little escape from the cold. As the Mastercard commercials say....."Priceless!"

Go ahead and enjoy yourself.
If you can pay for it without breaking the bank why not?

Well, I'd definitely make sure that where you are going in Texas is going to have decent weather before you start booking.

I live in Texas and woke up to snow and ice and 24 degrees. The wind is supposed to blow between 40-50 today with gusts up to 70.

San Antonio, Austin, or Houston might not be bad, but northern areas of Texas are still getting plenty of cold weather.

Of course, Houston got snow last week for 2 days straight.

Would be an awful long way to travel to get down here and still freeze while playing golf.

Good luck with your trip if you decide to take it!

$700 is not too bad . .but as others have said it would be even cheaper if you could get a 3rd day in. Also good advice about making sure you go south enough ... Corpus Christi ought to work in January, Dallas not so much.

Where are you going? San Antonio and south is pretty safe in January. There are some nice courses in San Antonio and along the south Gulf coast.

I listed the good courses for S. Padre and Corpus Christi/Port Aransas area in this thread
http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28100

To make it worth your while, you should play 36 holes both days.

You may also want to consider the Robert Trent Jones trail in Alabama. There are some courses there that are pretty far south and their package deals this time of year are normally pretty good.

As usual, the collective knowledge of this forum is amazing. I was planning on going to Dallas (my girlfriend has friends there that she wants to visit), but I might have to reconsider. The weather recently hasn't been good, and there seems to be a decent chance it won't be good in January. Then again, 45-50 degrees isn't terrible as long as it's sunny.

Ahh, the golf trip + girfriend. This is a challenge.

Southwest Airlines begins service from Washington Dulles to Harlingen (via stop in Houston or Chicago) on 1-10-10. Price for one person round trip $422

Harlingen is 30 miles from S. Padre (see links to previous threads on Padre stay and golf recommendations)

You can sell this as a trip to the beach. She might be able to talk her friends into meeting you all down there (cheap, quick flight from Dallas)

San Antonio via Chicago $300 round trip on Southwest Airlines.

January in Dallas can be warm and pleasant. It is also prone to freezing temps and sleet.

I used to live in Texas and agree that San Antonio/Austin are good spots.

Personally, if i were flying to another state for 3 days of golf, I would make arrangements to play at least 4 rounds and pick some higher end courses.

Crazy...no. The money part....depends on how much you love to play. I'm looking at mid-January going to Orlando (my son's between semester break) and playing four rounds in three days. It'll be pricey although the air fare is cheap right now. We could drive and save $$$. We don't own travel covers either. More expense. Considering how little I've played lately and the not so good forecast, It's looking good that we'll go. Just details now. Only variable is that my son could play a tournament at Pinehurst that same time. Does he want to take a chance and sign up for a tourney that could during the coldest time of the year or go to Florida and get a good tune up for the upcoming spring season? Remains to be seen. It's a non-refundable entry and last year it was in the 30s the whole time during that same tournament. So he's undecided. And I'm in limbo.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
