A consistent 4-iron off a 15 handicap is not going to be that easy. Do you hit your 5-iron OK? If so, I would try simply gripping down the 4-iron an 1" and trying to hit it exactly the same. You aren't aiming for a large divot with long irons; maybe taking the blades of grass off and the lightest bit of earth maybe. People vary anyway. One tip I always find useful is to swing long irons slllooooowwww. Or at least so it feels slow. I guess a nice tempo is probably closer; you don't want to be hitting conciously hard at the ball from the top.

I love my 4-Iron.
It's 1" longer than a normal one and pretty heavy.
I have to swing pretty hard to hit it good but the weight seems to keep it on plane.
What I try to do from 6i up is to just clip it off the ground.

push it back in your stance about one ball and just hit it...for me i never hit a 4I worth a damn. I worked on punching at the range till i was comfortable with and then started moving it forward.

Practice, practice we talkin bout practice??

Try to concentrate on swinging flat and around your body and then sweeping the ball off the grass as opposed to going steep and deep like you would with a short iron.
A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I find the tempo of my 4i and 3i feel a little "lazy". I have a slightly different swing with those 2 clubs. It's more of a sweeping type swing with a shallow divot compared to my mid or short irons. I rely on the added length of the shaft to compensate for a "faster" swing feeling.

Try this, put a long iron (or any iron) down on the ground and step on the club head so that the shaft and grip point up into the air. This will show you a rough trajectory of the ball. I don't think it's the actual trajectory, but I read it some where and found it interesting. It helps me convince myself that the ball will get airborne and gear my mind to the point of letting the clubhead do the work.

Along with the slow and sweep advice, here's an age-old drill for long irons:
* Hit five 8-iron shots, nice and smooth
* Hit five 4-iron shots, nice and smooth
* Hit five 7-iron shots, nice and smooth
* Hit five 3-iron shots, nice and smooth

Idea is that the confidence and tempo of your short-iron swings will work their way into your long-iron swings.

how can i hit my 4 iron the right distance without chunkin it i feel like every iron i hit i need to take a divot whats the correct feeling ?

If you want to consistently (relatively) hit a 4-iron. Hit a 3 iron (or even a 2-iron) occasionally. Typically, every time you hit long clubs at the range. Your longest iron will always be the hardest to hit. Practicing with a 3 will make the 4 feel easier to hit. You were asking about feel, right? Like AI said above - practice.

Everyone is different, but here's some of what it feels like when I hit long irons. - The takeaway isn't necessarily any slower than with my short irons (similar tempo), but it's definitely longer. Focus on taking the club all the way back (whatever that means for you) - like a 3-wood swing. Commit to the shot. - Waggle the clubhead in the impact zone, make a mental note of posture and how much crouch there is the legs (slightly different depending on stance that day - wind and stress related) maintain that body position (height - don't dip) throughout the swing. This helps promote a descending blow, but not too descending. Want an obscure practice drill? - take an old 4 iron out to a field of weeds. Find an area with dandelions. Imagine your 4-iron is a weed whacker and nip off a dandlion flower. Swing again, taking a bit more of the plant, until you're leaving just the root and a couple leaves visible. Go to the next dandeling and take it down to that final level in one swing. Do it again. You'll get the feeling of the swing path, the amount of turf to take and the force required.

Have you tried out hybrid clubs? I took my 3i and 4i out and replaced them with 3 and 4 Cleveland hybrids last year. Much easier to hit and has made a big difference to my game. Only issue is when it is really really windy as they do fly the ball quite high

Hope this helps

    • First off please forgive me if this is not a proper post or not in the proper location, still learning the ropes around here. Second, it's important that I mention I am very new to the game with only about 10 rounds of golf under my belt, most being 9 holes. Only this year have I started playing 18. That being said, I am hooked, love the game and am very eager to learn and improve. To give you an idea of my skill, the last 2 18 rounds I played were 110 and 105. Not great at all, however I am slowly improving as I learn. Had been having bad slicing issues with the driver and hybrids but after playing some more and hitting the range, I've been able to improve on that quite a bit and have been hitting more straight on average. Irons have always come easier to me as far as hitting straight for some reason. Wedges have needed a lot of improvement, but I practice chipping about 20-30 mins about 3-5 times a week and that's helped a lot. Today I went to the range and started to note down some distance data, mind you I am averaging the distances based off my best guess compared to the distance markers on the range. I do not currently own a range finder or tracker. From reading some similar posts I do understand that filling gaps is ideal, but I am having a some issues figuring out those gaps and understanding which clubs to keep and remove as some gaps are minimal between clubs. Below is an image of the chart I put together showing the clubs and average distances I've been hitting and power applied. For some reason I am hitting my hybrids around the same distances and I am not sure why. Wondering if one of them should be removed. I didn't notice a huge loft difference either. The irons I have are hand me downs from my grandfather and after playing with them a bit, I feel like they're just not giving me what could potentially be there. The feel is a bit hard/harsh and underwhelming if that makes sense and I can't seem to get decent distances from them. Wondering if I should be looking to invest in some more updated irons and if those should be muscle backs or cavity backs? My knowledge here is minimal. I have never played with modern fairway woods, only the classic clubs that are actually wood and much smaller than modern clubs. I recently removed the 4 and 5 woods from my bag as I was never using them and I don't hit them very well or very far. Wondering if I should look into some more modern fairway wood options? I appreciate any feedback or advice anyone is willing to give, please forgive my lack of knowledge. I am eager to learn! Thank you.
    • I would think that 3 in a row with the same players might get some behind the scenes examination from the SCGA if they were suspect.  Are there any clubs questioning the results?
    • What simple fact? A golf match is not a coin flip — there is a fact for you. I'm trying to help you, and you're throwing out what could easily be called sour grapes. Come with FACTS, not weak analogies. Then you've got nothing. Hopefully they've done a better job of making their case. 😛
    • It's pretty close. The odds of a 50/50 shot going your way 21 times are greater than 1 in a million!  I guess your point is, that simple fact is not enough to declare these guys dirty rotten sandbaggers. I disagree, but fair enough. I posted it here on the message board to get different perspectives, after all.  I probably won't be digging further into specific scores. I have no dog in this fight beyond a generalized contempt for sandbagging. With that said, it would not surprise if a lot of clubs shared my concern and were grousing about it to the SCGA.
