I took the day off today and went to the 2010 North Texas Golf Show in Dallas. I spent $14 bucks getting in and what a waste! I had expected manufacturers to be there showing off their lines and equipment and giving demonstrations. I did not see one major manufacturer there. It was half golf related; mostly golf resorts trying to push their accomdations and golf courses, a couple used equipment shops, some hitting cages, and a long putt competition that cost $5 bucks for a few chances. Otherwise it was overwhelmed by DirectTV, roofers, attic insulation, pave stone, home remodeling, hand creams, sports memorabelia, and the like. Are all golf shows like that? I was there for 1 hour and went home. I was hoping for so much more.

that sucks, I was thinking about going tomorrow, especially with the weather being too cold to tee it up... I've attended for the past several years and it's been OK, nothing great but at least they had some equipment manufacturers there to demo some clubs... if it's as bad as you say I'll just go to Edwin Watts and PGA Superstore instead

Along one side of the space they have hitting cages. Some of it taken by the Hank Haney Golf Range where they are selling lessons. Some of it is dedicated as an indoor range where you pay a few bucks to hit a small bucket. There they do have a small selection of different clubs you can choose from. It's nothing organized by manufacturer and the PGA store is much better. They did have one custom club fitter at a small display with different shafts you could try. It looked good and I expected much more of that. To be fair it was the first day and it is entirely possible that more vendors will be there Saturday and Sunday when more people are expected to be in attendance. I am assuming that the vendor displays are going to be occupied by the same vendors all weekend. Maybe the manufacturers will be taking over the space for Saturday and Sunday. I think Hank Haney himself is supposed to give a demo of some kind. The only space remaining to be occupied was at the very back and some hitting cage space. The show had way too may golf destination and non golf displays. If you're into golf travel then you need to go because there are a lot of them.

I went last night (mainly for the "free" Nelson ticket) and it was ok at best. Most of the real golf stuff was on the perimeter where the middle was definitely 80% non-golf related. Did see some Scotty Cameron's there for under $150 so I may go back just to get one. Other than that it was kinda....eh.

Most merchandise "shows" are like this. Second rate equipment, lots of cheapo stuff. I went to a home theater/stereo show at the Dallas Convention Center years ago. It was a bunch of cheap stuff at expensive prices.

Ha, yeah, but I would feel that way about

any consumer audio equipment. I don't even know what brands they have anymore, I walk into a store and the only brands I know are JBL and Sony. And anything that was ever made by Bose is not worth using as a paperweight.

I took the day off today and went to the 2010 North Texas Golf Show in Dallas. I spent $14 bucks getting in and what a waste!

Spent several years in Denton going to school at University of North Texas. If football is king in Texas, I would suspect golf is No. 2. It's discouraging to hear a golf show in Dallas sucks.

I missed the St. Louis Golf Expo in January because I just had surgery. So, I don't have much to compare shows to. Back in 2004 or so, the St. Louis show was pretty nice. Lots of major equipment manufacturers and component makers, just had to stand in line to test-hit stuff. At least you didn't spend $100 on a rock concert ticket where the main act talked politics all night.

A friend of mine was hacked off by some Springsteen "left of center" concert comments. This was pre-2008 election not something recent.

The Texas show sounds exactly like the Louisville KY show, good thing is I got in for free(family member works were it was held) highlight #2 was Brian Pavlet put on a good demonstration for being indoorsbut the downfall to Mr. Pavlet was Dan Boever came on right after and did almost the same demo.....and unless you were into booking a golf vacation there was really nothing there for you unless you wanted some used clubs.
If you always do what you've always done....You'll always be where you are right now..

    • after some years experimenting around, I've settled on a mixed bag of mostly Pat Simmons vintage Tiger Sharks (the ones with the blue enamal on back of the clubheads): 3 thru 9 iron, + 3 wedges (PW, sand, chipper). Those super heavy clubheads really help me get my swing down and thru the ball. Also I carry an old Taylor 18-degree rescue club, 17-degree and 14 degree ImagineGolf metalwoods, and the famous Pat Simmons "alien" 1-iron. Finally a real brick-on-a-stick, the big-headed Bettinardi Ben Hogan model putter which is excellent for taking the break out of short putts and getting the ball hole high on long ones. Wait....is that 15 clubs? Oh well....
    • this topic brought to mind one my favorite golf-spectator memories. Back when, living in Santa Barbara CA, parked in my yellow cab just behind the 10th tee  (c. 380 yard par 4) at SB Muni golf course while eating lunch. A twosome comes by, and first up is this fat little mexican guy who takes a kinda squirelly practice swing, then addresses the ball and bashes a long, high, perfectly straight drive up to w/in about 5 yards of the green. Other guy is dressed to the 9's, pulls out what looks like a $300 driver....and hits a maybe 150-yard pop fly. Slams clubhead to the ground and yells, "it's fat! It's fat! Everything is fat today!!"  And that's how I learned what a "fat" shot is.
    • day 57. Technique practice in the net. Really trying to slow down.
    • It may not be surprising that in the previous 7,064 posts, this particular point has been discussed. To which I will counter: If we're talking about results, why only the majors? Unless you know something that I don't, neither of us are in any position to judge whether Woods or Nicklaus lived their overall life better, not that such a thing is even objectively measurable, nor is it relevant to the discussion.
    • As we've had to tell other people, the topic is which is the better GOLFER, not human being.
