Hey guys, I know that there are a lot of Mizuno fans on this board. With a nice tax return coming my way I am thinking of returning to hitting blades. I want something with a lower ball flight and workability. What say you?

What say I (as a Mizuno fan)?

Based on the total awesomeness of forged blades, spend a couple bucks on ebay and pick up a set from one of the following:

Hogan Apex ca. 1984-87 (PCs), 1988 (Redlines), 1994-97 (Channelbacks), 1999

Titleist Tour Blades ca. 1980-1994

Mizuno MP ca. 1990 - 2000 (11, 14, 29, 33)

Cleveland Tour Action ca. 2000 (TA1 - Form Forged)

MacGregor (MT, Tourney, VIP, pretty much anything MacGregor forged, with your desired shaft flex, and in decent shape - they all rock)

Even though the feeling of the Titleists (IMHO) is at the bottom of this short list, the results speak for themselves - birdie putts.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

I bought my most recent set of Mizuno's last summer. The way the ball explodes off the clubface was one of the key features that sold me on my current set. My irons (MX 200s) are the perfect blend of workability and forgiveness that my game demands. I also hit the MP 57s side-by-side with the MX 200s and they were also great feeling irons; they just weren't for me.

All kidding aside just go to the store pick out all the diff blades and hit them side by side, whatever feels best to you go for it, don't try to sell yourself on a brand, sell yourself on how you hit them. Don't look at what they are either, for the mizunos you can probably tell by the grip but grab a cpl types so you don't automatically know which model it is.

Go online and research the metal treatment and hammering that goes on with Mizuno irons. Sound similar to the making of a Samurai sword.

Stopped by one of the area courses this afternoon, and the pro gave me a good science class on how Mizuno prepares their steel.

I've got the Mizuno MP-14s and love them. Used them half of my high school golfing career (1996-98) and actually up until last year. When your game is on, and if you're a good ball striker, they are deadly accurate and pure. However, don't expect to hit them quite as far as your newer clubs unless the lofts have been adjusted on the 14s. The MP-14s are pretty weak compared to today's specs. The MP-29's were also great and had a little bit stronger lofts and less offset, if I recall correctly. I also own a set of Mizuno MP Grads which I hit every now and then.

I currently use MacGregor PCB Tours, which I also love. I have gained a tad bit of distance and much more spin with the MacGregors. In my opinion, Mizuno and MacGregor, along with the older Hogans are some of the best irons ever made. What I'm actually looking for now, is a rare set of MacGregor PMB Tours (which are blades) so that I can do a mixed set with my PCB Tours, using 3-6 in the PCB Tour and 7-PW in the PMB Tour.

Look, in my experience, they sell themselves.

I plan to game three sets of irons this year (probably settling on one): MP-67s, TM RAC MB TP Smokes, and the 710 MBs.

I agree. When I bought mine, I went to demo a bunch of clubs and Mizunos weren't even on my radar. Looking back, I can't imagine purchasing anything else.

I would also agree, when I was in the market for new irons I tried all the forged blades out there, it came down to the MP60 or 67. I went with the MP60 as I got a little higher ball flight, which I am not a young man any more so felt that would be a better fit for me. I like the Mizuno do to the clean look, the soft feel and sound off the club. But those are all personal preferences, only you can decide if you like them also.

Great assessment. So many people buy clubs simply because of the name on the back (and if that's what gives you confidence in your game, so be it). My last fitting came down to two sets: MX200s or a forged set from Adam's golf. When I finally grasped the fact that my new irons wouldn't say "Titleist" or "Taylormade" on them, I ran with it and have never looked back.

I played MP-29 throughout highschool and a little after, they were great clubs. Now I play the MP-67. They are by far better. If you take the 2 sets and hit them you can tell their is a technology difference. The 67s are very workable. It is really in the comfort of the user. i suggest going somewhere and hitting all the clubs you can.

On one hand, there have been improvements in materials, forging processes (theoretically), shafts, and grips.

On the other hand, if you can hit a 2010 forged blade well, you can likely make the same shot using a forged blade from 1990.

      I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.

      What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.

      One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
