I used to work at Dicks Sporting Goods in the Pro Shop, and I would have the occasional person come in looking for ProV1's with high numbers stamped on the ball. Is there any significance to this? Or do people just want to be unique and play a higher number ball?

probably most people he plays with play the ProV. almost all will have the 1-4 numbered balls in their bag. having high numbers almost ensures no one will have the same ball in their bag.

No significance. Just something different. Golf balls are typically numbered 1-4, so playing 5-8 will, if nothing else, make your ball a little more unique when searching or at a quick glance as there are not as many of them out there. They are becoming more and more common with the Pro Vs especially, not sure about other brands.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Im sort of superstitious about it... I save the higher number pro Vs I get (lostgolfballs.com ftw) for tournaments. The higher the number the lower my scores... or at least thats how its supposed to work.

I've read where a some pros only play low numbers because they don't want anything over a 4 on the score card. Who knows though, people like things for different reasons. I don't pay any attention to the number.

An instructor I worked with told me he would not play anything over a 4 for the same reason.

I have Pro V1's in my shag bag, and there are a couple of No. 6's in there, not sure where they came from...

I play 1-4 in casual rounds, but in tournaments I like to use 3's... always a good number to write on the card

I don't care what number is on the ball. I often buy balls from Ebay, where they mix up some high numbers too.
