Hows it going everyone, I am new to the forums and i deffinatley think that some of you can help me out or at least any comment would be appreciated..

also i am sorry for writing this book i just felt like i needed to explain myself fully and any help is much appreciated

so like the title sais i am a bogey golfer and i am 21 years old, i am graduating next year from college and want to pursue a career somewhere in the golf world primarlily course design (virtual, i.e. Tiger Woods games and real), its kind of tough to explain my career path and how i view it ,but the point being is that I want to be a better golfer, primarily a scratch golfer but i would settle for 5 and i think i deffinatley have the potential to get there..

I want to re-club my entire bag and what i have now is...

KZG Gemini 460 10.5 S-flex
Taylormade Burner 5 wood R-flex bubble shaft
Titleist DCI 990 CB 4-pw R-flex
Never compromise putter

kind of a wierd set and its not even full, here is the main problems i am having, i think some of you might say that my largest problem is that i am hitting an iron that i am just not skilled for but the thing is my grandfather got these for me when i was 13 and they are what i learned on, I like blades, i like the look the size and the feel, i dont really like offset clubs or ones that are big and bulky.. i like them slim and "light"..also these are the best clubs in my bag that i hit and i hit them straight with a slight fade and i hit a lot of greens and i am very confident from 185 (4 iron) and in... my problems with my scoring come from off the tee with errant slices and a lot of 3 putts.. my chipping is good but i use a pw for all my shots around the green so i think that could deffinatley improve with more of a variety of wedges

so here is what i think i want..I am kind of looking for a set that would include A 9.0 degree driver, a 3 & 5 wood, 3-hybrid, 4-9 (preferably forged CBs, but hey maybe i am wrong and i should try something else) wedges 48 56 and 60..i am also thinking of swapping the 5 wood for a gap wedge and a putter..i have no idea about a putter i was think the odyssey 2 ball blade....

i am not partial to any brand i just want a product that will help me out and as far as a price limit i would like to spend less then 1500 but i will do whatever it takes if need be

also i was looking into something like clone golf clubs from gigagolf do any of you reccomend these?

thanks

What's in my Bag:

Think I'm gonna start with telling you to just go to your local golf shop and start hitting irons and obviously other clubs. I think that what most people are going to suggest you do. Obviously everyone has their favorite golf clubs and golf brand so those will probably be recommended to you first. Just a few irons I could think of off the top of my head.

Callaway X-22
Ping G15
TaylorMade Burners
TaylorMade R7s

Your best bet again is to just head to a golf shop, explain your situation, and they should be able to get you demoing clubs pretty quick.

Honestly, any clubs will work. Just practice and play a lot. I'm not a 5, but I'm decent, and I shoot about the same with any type of club. Huge PING Zing GI irons, Callaway X-16s, Titleist 775s, 1980's Titleist or Wilson blades, Macgregor MT Pro blades, some Cobra CBs when visiting my dad, my current Mizuno MX-200s - around the same score and shot type with all of them.

first of all, if your irons are in good shape then i think you should keep using them. if i remember correctly those 990s are sort of semi cavity back but more like a blade (could be wrong). if you hit em good then keep using them. your not gonna get much more distance if you buy new blade clubs as the technology has barely changed for them. but if you feel the need to buy new ones in my opinion mizuno and titleist make the best player clubs. and i think your smart for sticking with blades or close. people don't realize that players clubs are the true game improvement clubs. when you feel your mishits and whatnot you work a lot faster to get rid of em and become more aware of them versus GI or SGI. your ideal set makeup is good and traditional. i prefer losing the 5W and adding a wedge, but to each his own. for wedges i think cleveland and titleist vokeys are the best but if you go with name brand your really not gonna find a "bad" wedge. driver and 3W is really all about just testing them. but i would recommend taylormade, ping, titleist. hit everything in the shop on a monitor and then play a round or two with your favorites. the one thing i would recommend above everything else i've said is GET FITTED. don't buy off the rack. lastly, IMHO putter brand is absolutely meaningless unless maybe you feel more confident with a certain name on your putter. just my opinion. check my sig on that one. anything else holler

Welcome to the forums mate. Sounds like a good job you have in mind. Now onto the golf.... Im sure you could cut some strokes down by getting all sorts of new equipment however.... I would suggest you practice more and get a lesson from a pro. My ultimate goal is to get to 10 hcp. I seem to be stuck at around 15 atm even with getting up at 6am to go practice in the cold winter mornings. I would think its fair to say most people over 10hcp would struggle to produce a consistent swing every time. Go hit some balls at the shop and make sure you get fitted with your new clubs of choice.

Imagine if you walked into a shoe store, and said, "I can run a mile in 10 minutes, but I want to run it in 5. What shoes do you have that will help me do that?"

The answer is pretty simple. If you have a decent pair of running shoes, and they fit properly, then you need to practice more. If you're wearing wingtips that are 3 sizes too big, then you're losing major time.

The moral of the story is, get fitted. What you play means almost nothing. You can have the best clubs on the market, and if they don't fit, you're out of luck. Go to the local pro or golf shop, and let them know you want to be fitted. They will recommend the best model (SGI, Game Improvement, Players, Blades, etc), the best setup, the best shafts, the best grips, and all sorts of stuff. When you have clubs that fit you properly, there's nothing to hold you back but you. If your clubs don't fit, then your swing is going to suffer as a result, and you'll develop bad habits. Always get fitted.

Shanks is right. Get fit. Brand really means nothing now days. All the major OEM's make good clubs. Pick the brand you like and get fitted. The next key is hooking up with a PGA Teaching Professional. I have been very lucky to have the same PGA teacher/coach for nearly thirty years. He knows my swing better than I do and he has made me what I am today although I'm just an average player at best.
Proper fitting and one on one work with a qualified pro is the key to good golf in my book.

Go hit everything and don't rule out ANYTHING until you have hit it. Including GI or SGI irons. You may like the look of blades, you shouldn't ignore what works just because of looks.

What is "a lot" of greens?

shades, good thing you pointed it out, "a lot" might be an exageration but i would say that in a round i am good for at least 10 girs....I am solid on the par 3s and as long as i dont hit my drive in the woods or in a hazard i can handle the other holes, if i do miss the green it is usually left only by a little and rarley short..as far as the comment to why not just keep my irons, i feel that some newer technology has come out that i can benefit from and maybe i do want to get away from the blade by a little bit and i also want to get fit..after going to Dicks and my local course i found some clubs that i think i might like. as for Woods and a hybrid i think im pretty sold on the Callaway Diablo edge series and after reading reviews and others input on them i think they will be a great addition...as for Irons i think i am between the Callaway Diablo forged which i havent seen for myself just online..also at my local course they had a set of Mizuno MP-52s which i really liked...as far as wedges i think im just going to go with titleist BV 48 52 56 60 and putter odyssey 2 ball blade putter...i might also look into ping clubs

If the set you buy comes with a PW I'd probably take out the vokey 48 as it would be the same as a PW. Unless you prefer the vokey 48 over a normal PW.

. . . i am a bogey golfer and

1.) You're not 13 anymore. Either those irons were too much for you to handle then, or you're too much for them now. Get fit and move on - not necessarily an "upgrade", just something current.

2.) A 185 yard 4 iron is okay. For a 13 year old (jk). Try something newer. Did I mention getting fitted? 3.) I have no experience with gigagolf specifically, but if this is step one of a lifelong pursuit - chasing a dream - I'd recommend an OEM. All the ones recommended up this point are top notch.

Mizuno MP600 driver, Cleveland '09 Launcher 3-wood, Callaway FTiz 18 degree hybrid, Cleveland TA1 3-9, Scratch SS8620 47, 53, 58, Cleveland Classic 2 mid-mallet, Bridgestone B330S, Sun Mountain four5.

If you want to buy clubs from GigaGolf, go right ahead and do it. GigaGolf equipment is top quality, and will last just as long as name Brand equipment. It's a reputable manufacturer, with a play and return gaurantee. my irons are GigaGolf and I have two GigaGolf Hybrids. They are just as good as the other two Titliest sets I own...

While you are throwing money around, get some putting lessons.

I'm in just about the same boat. Can't get off the tee but once I reach 200 in I'm fine. I'm looking into getting either Adams or GigaGolf irons.

Career Bests:

9 Holes--37 @ The Fairways at Arrowhead-Front(+2)

18 Holes--80 @ Carroll Meadows Golf Course(+9)

Home Course:

1) The Fairways at Arrowhead

2) Mayfair Country Club

Clubs are irrelevant. Your mental game and physical swing are what separates scratch golfers from 20 handicaps.

I could go out and shoot within 3 shots of my average with any set of clubs sold today. I wont shoot lights out though. The reason, my short game. It will still suck no matter what clubs I use.

Whats in my Four5....

That's what I was down too about a month go, but I was also looking at the Callaway X-22's. All are great clubs.

GigaGolf has the GX922 on sale right now, it's their top selling club and is a mid GI club similar in design to Callaway X-22, Diablo's, and a lot of the other perimeter weighted cavity backs from other OEM's. A guy that always hits around the same time as me at the range has the X-22's and we trade clubs all the time for a few swings and niether of us can really tell. He just bought a few hybrids from GigaGolf after hitting my irons and seeing them first hand. I think the GX922's are 15% off this whole month....

You can buy any and every club on the market, and it won't change how you play the game. If there were really a club that took you from a 25 handicap to a 5 handicap, it would put every other maker on the market out of business. I can play to my handicap with anything from KZG to Taylormade, so long as the clubs fit me.

So, get fitted. That's all that matters, not brand, not model, but fit.

    • No, they will collect the "Stay & Play" cost at the Virtues on Sunday. I was a little surprised by that, I would collect on Saturday, but I guess the person doing the reservations & bills is located at the Virtues.  I think we can trust that none of us are going to run out on the bill and leave us in a lurch.
    • Thanks for following up. Since you're going to be booking the stay and play packages, does that mean you have to put up the money up front?
    • They're playing 16 games in each match though. Don't need much of an advantage before that number of players significantly loads things in their favor. The other team has to win 8.5 games to beat them. At a 65/35 split, that's a lot and pretty unlikely (about 10% of the time).
    • Why does the second sentence have to be true? If they're used to playing a tough course that's improperly rated, they're going to both have inflated indexes and have higher skills relative to them. If their home course features a variety of different challenges, I don't see why their game wouldn't travel well. And on the flip side, some courses and their members take pride in how hard their course is and how tough it's rated, and that bit of vanity ends up hurting them in these kinds of competitions.
    • I discussed it today but can call back and re-confirm.  I would love to be wrong on that point. Note: That may have been before they changed the hotel due to lack of room at Hampton Inn. Update on Friday Hotel: If I can give a count to EagleSticks they can get us a discount on Friday night at the hotel.  I do not have the $$ but should be much lower than the $249 the hotel quoted me. I do not have my list with me for the Friday hotels but if you want one, please post ASAP and I will get the rate and get them held. Thanks @billchao for catching this.
