This is probably a mathematical question rather than a golfing one, but here goes....

Assuming 7i straight carry distance is 150yds
Assuming you're a righty if you hit a golf ball with a 7i and the golf face is open 1*, how many yards to the right will the ball land? If you're 2* open, is that distance doubled? Is there a standard equiation to apply here?

Cheers

Stu

Haven't seen that article before, I'll have to read it.

On the subject, has there ever been done testing on the amount of sidespin inflicted on a ball and the difference in spin on balls? On ball tests, they measure and rate the amount of spin on the balls, but can you use that information to calculate sideways spin? A soft high spinning ball like vs a 2-layer harder one can range from 6900 rpm down to 3500, almost twice the amount of spin.

If you set up Iron Byron to swing at a golf ball with the club face some degrees open or shut relative to the swing path, what results would you get when using the different balls? Can this be calculated in any way, assuming you got the identical conditions in terms of impact and degrees?

You often see people not advice high handicappers to use soft balls because they will give you more sidespin and consequently put you farther into the woods. It would have been interesting to know exactly how much the difference in spin can affect a ball flight. You won't be able to calcuate it 100% probably, but some estimates would have been useful.

That's a good article Erik, but it still doesn't answer my question :) The table below is the closest to what I'm after, but I don't see how to extrapolate this data into what I'm looking for.

The below shows that on an approach of 150 yds, you can be +/- 4.76* and still hit a green 25 yds wide. Does that mean a 1* open would be roughly +/- 5.25 yds (25 / 4.76) right and a 2* would be roughly +/- 10.5 yds right of target? What's the equation to use if my 7i goes 155yds instead of 150?

Appr. Width tan(θ) θ (+/-)

50 25 0.2500 14.04

100 25 0.1250 7.13
115 25 0.1087 6.20
130 25 0.0962 5.49

No, but it gives you the math you need to figure it out for yourself.

The below shows that on an approach of 150 yds, you can be +/- 4.76* and still hit a green 25 yds wide.

Which means that 4.76 degrees equals 12.5 yards. At 150 yards, one degree is roughly 2.6 yards.

What's the equation to use if my 7i goes 155yds instead of 150?

SOH-CAH-TOA

155 is the hypotenuse, or the H. We know the angle we want to plug in, which is the S, C, or T. We're trying to find the length of the side opposite the angle (O = opposite). So we need to use TOA. TOA is tan(angle) = opposite/adjacent. O is unknown. tan(1) = x/155 155 * tan(1) = x 155 * 0.0175 = x x = 2.7 yards.

Phew - too much maths for me - hence why I asked the question.

Thanks for clarifying Erik.

Erik,

Sorry, maybe I'm being a bit thick here, but can you clarify where you get the 0.0175 figure from? I've tried TAN(1), but that gives 1.557408. I understand that from the above example, the "1" is the 1* of angle, and the 155 is the distance in yards. Thanks Stu

Check radians versus degrees, if you use excel it works in radians. your hand calculator will say either deg or rad on it to tell you to use degrees or radians.

Excel,

=TAN(RADIANS(##°))

Zeph has got to respond to this!  It was a technical question and got a great technical answer.  How did it work out?  Have you adjusted your clubs or did you alter your swing?

Easy math.  Club face square = on the green putting.  Open club face = sand trap, trees, cart path.
