I just bought a Big Moss putting green that is 6' x 15'. The only thing wrong with it was that it had been folded over and had some creases. I consulted the manufacturer before purchase and they recommended hot water and pressure to remove the creases. So far, so good. Anyone up for a little night putting...putting at night with the fifteen-year-old daughter of the Dean.

Woah! That makes my rinky-dink little green look, well, rinky-dink. Looks like some swanky digs you got there.

When it comes to break, I prefer as straight a practice green as I can get. If I know I have a straight on putt, I can tell better whether I'm pushin' or pullin'.

If I had not already finished my basement, I'd be all over that. It doesn't make much sense for me to put one outside since you'd only get to use it for six months out of the year. I need something indoor here in Michigan.

Im thinking about trying to make my own backyard green. Probably about a 20 foot circle. I dont plan on getting real carried away and buying a special mower for it or anything. Just looking to till the soil, roll it as smooth as I can, and seeding it really heavy. It would not bother me if I could not putt on it real good, even if the chips bounced and rolled straight I would be happy. Has anyone else tried something like this? Is it even worth my time?

14ledo,

I way ahead of you. In my secret life, I would design entire golf courses. But, reality sucks...

I played golf one day with a guy who owns a landscaping service. I mentioned to him my idea of building my own grass putting green, and he said it is way more hassle than it's worth. You have to prepare a seed bed and nurture the early grass growth. Big thing: In some states you have to be certified to handle the chemical week-killer and special fertilizers you'd need to make a go of it, or hire someone to do a special application. Then, you'd need to aerate it a couple of times a year. A used greens mower would handle a single green in your back yard, but that would be a lot of hassle for mowing 300 square feet a couple of times a week.

I know this is way more than you wanted to do. So, the Big Moss is probably more realistic for guys like you and me. From what I understand, if you prepare the undersurface properly, you can use it for chip shots also.

A real putting green would almost impossible and you need a special mower to cut it short enough to use it. I think you can buy the special mower used for around 4 to 6 thousand. I would look for a standard synthetic putting green and save yourself the hassle. However if you try it I would love to hear the progress of it as I hope you do succeed!!!!

Well, it sounds like most people said what I thought myself, not worth it. The reason I thought I would try is because I have an area in my backyard that I hit balls to, and I mowed it as short as I could. The mower says it goes down to less than 1 inch. This is just my regular mower btw. Anyway, the ground was to rough and the grass not thick enough to see if it would really work, but in some small sections it seemed ok, enough to give me some hope to try to make it nice.
I already have a tiller for my garden and I live in the country with my own well so water is cheap. I would really only be out my time. I think im gonna try it anyway. It might take awhile to see results, but if I remember ill post here again to let people know how it went, that is if anybody really cares.

How much land do you have? If you have a quarter-section (160 acres), send me the topo map and aerial (for tree clumps), and I'll sketch you the concept for an 18-hole course.

I only have 5 acres of my own. In my yard, from along side the house to the far corner of the lawn, it is about 85 yards. This is where I practice wedges, and chipping. I do lose a fair amount of balls in the surrounding trees though.
My neighbor has a 40 acre open area with a few trees on it. He allows me to hit balls there whenever I want. I cant do any alterations on his land.

I put in a synthetic green 12 by 20. Lowes.com has the plans for it for free. I modified their plans to suit me and top filled the green to speed it up. Looks great too.

I looked online at Lowes and didn't see any plans. Do you have a link?

Just google Lowes putting green project. They updated their pics too

I don't know how to add a link yet but I'm looking in to it.

Thanks for the link. I am still reading the link instructions. Oh the joys of the interwebs.
