I played a course Saturday and suffered a bogey on several holes that left me saying WTF. On several holes, I had what appeared to be a simple pitch to the green from the fairway, but the result was similar to a fat shot. The first time, I assumed that I hit it fat, but subsequent times I thought I made solid ball first contact and inspected the divots. This is when I discovered that there was about .5" of roots between the turn and the soil making it very spongy.

Has anyone ever experienced similar conditions and how did you adjust?

I have hit on what felt like a water matress, but it didn't affect my distances, so I played it like normal.

I would prefer tight lies and firm turf most of the time, but a little bit of fluff isnt too big of a deal.

I haven't noticed a difference. Although my home course fairways are fairly firm, I like the way that divots come off spongy grass better (they're so clean!).

Is it possible that you were hitting the ball slightly heavy with a relatively low bounce wedge This might produce acceptable results on a firmer fairway, but the low bounce will make the club dig into a softer surface.

Yea I love that kind of grass. It makes a perfectly hit shot feel even better to me.

The only downfall is sometimes you'll get some flyers...
