One of my friends is looking to upgrade to one of these sets of irons from his Nike CCi cavs.

He plays of around 12, if he played more could probably make mid single figures. Reckon he needs to improve his 5 and 6 iron but enjoys the CCis on the whole.

For this reason I said the AP1 irons would be a good choice as they are a nice balance between enhancement and improvement clubs.

He has looked at the VR's and S57 also and has indicated he will get them custom fitted.

What would you recommend?

I would say Ap2 overs the Ap1's for a 12 HC. But I think the Ping S57 out of what you said

If I understand your comment correctly, he is good with short irons but needs help mid-irons?

All three sets you describe mix well. He can get AP1 / Nike VR FC for the long irons and AP2 / Nike VR SC/TW for the short irons. I think the Pings mix, but I don't know the differences on their models outside the g/i models.

I wouldn't recommend anything to him, but for me it would be in reverse order of how you listed them. Swap the AP-1 for AP-2 they'd edge out the Nike's for second place. This assumes the PING stock grips would be switched out.

your comparing two GI irons and one players iron
personally i would choose the PING's, but i dont think your buddy has the game for S57's (yep i just said that..someone had to)

i think HE should go in to a box store, try some ou that appeal to HIS eye...not yours

I might agree if his buddy was looking at playing some 1980s era blades, but I don't think PING has ever made a set of irons that a 12 couldn't play.

I just got the s57 and I love them but they play pretty close to a blade. Even though they are not forged they still have great feel and workability. I would say the ap2 are a very solid iron and I'd recommend them for a 12 any day.

AP1. The Pings would be too much to handle.

Thanks for help folks, those were the 3 sets he fancied, not really my recommendations but think he had a swing with them decided it was between those 3.

He SMS'd me to say he is going for a custom fitting this weekend of a 4,5 and 6 iron of AP1 and a 7,8, 9 and PW of the AP2.

Reckon that would be a nice iron combo.

then you have never hit the S57's .......as the two other singles that have posted here, they r basically a blade iron

i dont care how good of a ball striker you are at a 12, they will hurt your game guaranteed looks like dude settled on a combo of AP1's and 2's which would suit him better IMO but what do i know......

I've hit 'em, they're not GI cavity backs, but I thought they were a lot easier to hit than blades. Blade-like, but with quite a bit of forgiveness built-in.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
