I was looking on my scorecards today and I noticed I almost always (90%) drop 4-8 strokes on the second half. I normally hit the range before I play, and this is what I would think is right for me since I normally have a spot on short game. But I always end up loosening up after the turn. Today went from a 52 front and a 44 back, if I can just do as good at the start that's a drastic improvement.

You could try some Fowler-esque stretches before your game, or practice more on the range if you can before each round.

Personally, I never warm up on the range... that's a sure ticket to poor play on the course for me. Don't know why, but it is.

I stretch, and then I spend my warm up time at the chipping green. That seems to get me ready for play better than any other method I've tried, and in 21 years of playing in handicap competitions, I've tried a lot of things.

Not saying that it will work for you, but it sure sets my tempo right for the 1st tee.

I'm finding that flexibility is in part a general state of your conditioning. Basically, on days I play I avoid some of my more vigorous stretching exercises. They can actually irritate my back if I go overboard.

IF I ever joined a club, I would probably jump on the elliptical machine for 10 minutes before I headed to the practice area.

Also, I simply don't play well if I don't hit some practice shots before I tee off. Not talking about rebuilding my game, but chips and pitches, some drives to get a feel of the turf grass and how I'm swinging that day, and a few 5 and 7 irons. For a small bucket, I'll often leave a few on the practice tee when I head for the first hole

And, about 10 minutes of putting to make sure I'm contacting the ball squarely.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I play best if I hit a couple balls on the range and then putt for a few minutes before I start my round.

I prefer to stretch out a bit and then hit about 20-30 balls on the range prior to playing. I find that it calms me down prior to playing if I can do this otherwise I'm all jacked up on the first couple holes and I can't control anything.

First I strettttttttchhhhh. Then I start on the chipping range for awhile. Until I get good feel out of the grass ( I usually stop after I hole a few chips or get 10 straight within 4ft). Then I head to the range, start with my PW at 40-50% power. Little straight chips and try to land around 60-70yrds out. Then I start slowly adding more power and aiming for the practice greens. Then I pull the 7-Iron out. Then the 5-Iron. Then I pull my 3-Hybrid, then 3-Wood. After I feel I've hit all those pretty decently, I pull the driver out.

After all that I head to the putting green and start out getting a feel with long distance putts. Then I put those out and aim to 2 putt EVERYTHING so I can practice shorter putts and distance. Then I aim with 3ft putts and hole as many as possible til' I meet up with my group or it's my tee time :)

I always stretch. Occasionally I will hit ONE 7i, ONE 4 hybrid, and ONE driver. This little exercise will determine how much beer I consume during the round.

I am pretty flexbile all the time, really don't get stiff to often, at least not enough to cause issues with my swing.

What i like to do is hit some putts, halfwedges and chip shots, just to get the feel down. Full swings are easier to catch on quicker than trying to get short game and putting tuned in.

If I don't have much time I can get by with hitting 10-15 balls to get loose, then putt a little to get the feel for the green speed. If I have time, and plenty of range balls, I like to hit as many as I can without getting wore out. I prefer to step on the first tee feeling like I have already played 9 holes.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Do you always play same course it could be just that the backside is easier and fits ur game better. Just m2c

This happens to me too often. For me I doubt it has anything to do with warming up though, as opposed to poor play. I usually warm up with a few light swings just to loosen up. Then some upper body stretchs, and a few squats to warm up the legs.

Before I hit any balls, either on the range or straight off the first tee I go through the same little routine. I take a 7 and 8 iron and swing them together a bit to loosen up. Ill do some reaching (not stretching because its not static and I don't hold) and thats all. I'm quite flexible most of the time so this is all just to loosen up and get any stiffness out.

If I have time I'll chip 3 balls onto the practice green and then do some putting but most of my rounds are out of the locker room and onto the first tee.

Waiting for summer...

Get out of the car, walk the bag to the drop area, pay for the round, then stretch. Toe touches and standing twists. Sometimes I'll pull the driver out and do some slow tempo swings.
As far as hitting balls... No matter what, I always hit the practice green for putts. I start with a handful of balls from 4-6 feet. Then I'll move way back and hit a couple for lag. I try to spend at least 10 minutes on the practice green right before we tee off. If we can get to the course more than 1/2 hour early, I'll hit the practice tees and swing through the bag... usually not more than 5 balls per club.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

One bourbon... one scotch... one beer. Let's play!

Seriously though, I truss myself with my three iron and stretch rotationally. Sometimes I'll have my weighted club with me and I'll give that a few swings and then I hit some half and three-quarter wedges, and work my way up through the bag - just a couple of each - and then I head to the green for putting and chipping.

I usually get to the course a hour before my round.

Spend about 30-40 minutes at the range and hit a total of about 30-40 balls just to get a feel for my swing and stretch a bit. Then I hit the green to get a feel for how the greens are that day and to smooth out my putting stroke. If I don't stretch and warm up at the range before, thats a sure way for me to hook and slice my drives for the first 3 holes.

    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
