In the last week of July, I took up golf again after a ten-year-hiatus (I'm 26). Due to a pretty fortunate situation, I can pretty much play golf all day every day...except for I can't, because of my god damn hands.

I understand that after 10 years of inactivity the muscles in my hands may be suffering a bit of atrophy, but this is ridiculous. After one measly round of golf, my hands are sore for days. My grip is light so what's the deal?

For the most part, a few days pass and my muscles are ready to go again...except for the ring finger on my left hand which remains in a permanent state of being jammed. It just doesn't heal. I've never injured that finger before and even after a week off of golf, it's still slightly jammed (with no sign of improvement from day to day).

Has anyone experience a similar injury? Why only this finger out of all the other ones?

When you played golf before your hiatus did you have this problem?

No, I have no memories of so much as even a single sore muscle in all my younger days of playing golf--though then I was only playing once or twice a week. My goal now was to play/practice every day, but my body is just not willing.

Really strange! That rules out what I was thinking (had a friend that had something like this)..
You may have to check with a doctor, and get some exrays, could even be arthritis! Its not totally unheard of to start getting arthritis in hands and fingers at your age.
Not sure, really.
I can tell you I played 12 years ago A LOT but then was in a car accident and couldnt play for 7 years, and when I started again, my hands and fingers hurt. But they would usually start hurting a few hours after the round and be okay by the morning. It wasnt painful enough not to play. After a few weeks, apparantly my hands and fingers got used to the "work" again, and it stopped all together.
Good luck figuring it out, though!

I have an issue that may be similar, although it's on my right hand. It feels jammed to me as well, to the point of pulling it and releasing it, then shaking it out. Two things have helped. Changing my grip (in my case stronger), and using a firmer grip (yes firmer). Hope it helps!

I've been having a similar problem in my left hand. No soreness, but sometimes the joint after the knuckle, 2nd in from the tip, gets stuck. I have to force it to unbend or use my other hand to pop it out. Doesn't hurt at all. I just think it's a bit funny. Never had a problem like that before I took up golfing last summer. I swing my clubs just about everyday. I have no suggestions on how to fix your problem. I just live with it, heh. Give yourself maybe a month or 2 and you should stop feeling sore the next day after a round. Your body needs time to get used to the motions again.

At 26 there is no way that you should have any sort of problem with your hands just from playing golf. I didn't even start playing until about that age and I've never had any problems like what you describe. There has to be more going on than just using a golf club.... I'd say that a visit to an orthopedist is in order.

+1.

No point asking people over the internet about a problem like this. This king of problem isn't normal.

I don't know! But I'm scared! Hold me!

Hehe, maybe I need to switch back to corded grips. I didn't have this problem with my old clubs with the thicker corded grips.

i have the same issue but its my pinky finger on my right hand. Im not going to say i have a light grip cause i dont. I hold on pretty good. It usually doesnt start until i play a few days in a row and then takes about a day to go away. Aleve works well to help it loosen up. Im going with an arthritic type condition. I am 23...used to do alot of working with my hands and in the morning after one of those days my hands would be super sore and somewhat numb.

But if your wondering...it does go away.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
