Hello all.
I am looking to purchase a lightly used set of Titleist AP2 irons and i was ideally looking for them with the KBS Tour stiff steel shafts. But, to my disappointment, these shafts are extremely rare, due to special order and the upcharge.

I am looking for someone to reccommend a Dynamic Gold shaft that is similar to the KBS Tour stiff. I am mostly concerned about weight, as I am a teenager and need something that i can handle, but still grow into. I'm really just asking for you to reccommend a shaft that is stock, or easy to find, that has similar characteristics to the KBS Tour. Thank you so much.

as far as easy to find goes, the DG S300 is just about the most common shaft you can find out there. As far as the weight goes, i believe the DG True Temper S300 will be just slightly heavier than the KBS Tour but not so significant enough that you can't swing it.

Honestly you can really go wrong with the S300... another option you can consider that is just a bit lighter than the S300 is the Project X 5.5 or 6.0 (6.0 being a bit stiffer). A bit more spendy but pretty common to find.

Maybe someone can chime in on difference in stiffness between S300 vs KBS Tour vs PX 5.5

Watch the DG vs. PX debate. I love DG and hate PX. I find PX

feel really harsh; hate the feel. Can't complain about the PX performance but they feel really harsh to me so I don't use them. DG aren't that heavy really; been used for years by all sorts of players from beginner to pro. The KBS are supposed to behave fairly uniquely. Any users comment on them? You could look at the DG SL (SuperLight) which are meant to play exactly the same as normal DG but be just under 100g cut length. Don't ignore Nippon's shafts either. Usually get great reviews and they come in under DG for weight. Becoming more commonplace but not exactly common like DG. The 950 and 1050 shafts are supposed to be excellent and even the "Tour Series" 1150 are around 115g in weight.

I see...I personally haven't really felt that the PX was harsh for me. But I've played DG's all my life, until this past year...the reason I went with the Flighted PX was cuz I was hitting the DG's way too high. The Flighted PX's helped keep my trajectory a bit lower. Both great shafts though.

I love the DGS300. It was a Tour staple for years (and still has quite a following).

Hello all.

I have a set of the irons you mentioned and do not have any problems with the DG S300. I was originally fitted for the 08 AP2s with the PX 5.5 but since those weren't available anymore I got the dynamic golds. I though they'd be too heavy for me as I am a teenager as well. However, I have become a lot stronger in the past year and have noticed that the DG S300 fit me well, even though I'll probably switch to the 5.5 Flighted or 6.0 Flighted next time I buy a set of irons.

I'd say the DG S300 will fit you but if you're worried about the extra weight you can always get the superlites which I think are roughly 15 grams lighter.

I am looking for someone to reccommend a Dynamic Gold shaft that is similar to the KBS Tour stiff.

I have played both the KBS Tour Stiff (currently) and various DG shafts and the closet DG shaft that i can recommend to the KBS Tour stiff is the DG S300 but they are not the same...but close. The DG is 130 grams and the KBS is 120 grams...the DG (to me) feels just a tad bit stiffer or harder then the KBS Tour. The biggest difference to me is the way the KBS feels...even though it is lighter by 10 grams, on the down swing the shaft just feels like it loads very well and I love the ball flight I get from it better then the DG...I am in no way knocking the DG. I also feel like I can work my ball flight a little better with the KBS (high or low)...hope this helps.

I guess the OP should take these posts with a grain of salt considering they're somewhat contradictory.

Hello all.

Another option mite be getting the FST 125 pro series shaft. These are supposed to be a lot like KBS shafts and they are around the same price as DG's. FST also makes the KBS shafts.

A quick note on DG's. I've found the spine to be very noticable on DG shafts and IMO they need to be spined. I'm not bad mouthing DG shafts cuz they are good, but the quality control, again IMO, is pretty loose.

Thank you all for the posts. They have helped me greatly with my decision.

I have been looking on eBay for the last couple days for a used set in the 450-550$ range and today I lost a bid on a nice set. As I went to check the new listings, a set that was brand new, wrappers and all, popped up, delivered at my doorstep for 620$. I hopped on it and cannot wait for them to arrive!

Just FYI i went with the Dy. Gold S300's as my Coach reccommended them and i hit them, and they felt very similar to the KBS Tours. Thank you all once again. I will let you know how they are when they arrive! Keep the birdies coming!

I find them noticeable too. Do they have such a pronounced spine as a grip alignment aid or something?

and IMO they need to be spined.

Dumb question on my part but what does this mean?

That said I like the shaft. I'm surprised by how high they fly. I figured that trajectory characteristic was to control spin and roll. Then again, I was a "picker" at one point so my ball flight might naturally have tended toward high in the past. Might be moving toward being more of a digger, as I work on a slightly more de-lofted angle of attack.

Congrats on the iron purchase.

I'm slowly convincing the wife that a set of AP2's belongs in my bag... Really love those irons.

Just curious how what you quoted from my post was contradictory? I simply statetd each shafts weight and then went on to explain how the DG felt to me and then how the KBS felt...I don't see anything contradictory about my post at all???

LOL Well I did bid on one set that sold for $501....but I thought about it and I really wanted to get fitted. I ended up getting the 710 CB's at my local edwin watts for $750 after some discounts.

Congrats on the iron purchase.

I agree they are amazing. I think its a pretty perfect combination of a blade look, but being a touch more forgiving than a true mizuno or some other titleists. I cannot wait for them to arrive! I just shudder at the fact that I'm going to have to get them dirty.... lol.

I find them noticeable too. Do they have such a pronounced spine as a grip alignment aid or something?

For spining I use a simple roller bearing "T" and rotate the shaft 360*. What I noticed with the DG shafts was that there was no guessing at where the spine was as opposed to the KBS spine that was very subtle.

As for spining, IMO, you need to be a fairly consistent ball striker to notice spining. All spining does is orient the spine of all of the shafts to the same aspect in the club head; for me that is spine at 9:00 o'clock in the club head. What this does is tighten up the shot dispersion, and that is why one should be at least a fairly good ball striker to see any results from spining. Short of a spinner wedge shaft the DG's put more spine on the ball than other shafts. That is one of the reasons I prefer PX to DG; but I would be remiss if I didn't say they both have there pro's & con's and its more of a matter of what you like.

I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
