Fairly Decent field for the Sony Open this year. Sucks that its in Hawaii in terms of watching it for me as its ridiculously late at night but imma be watching anyways.

Imma stick with my guy and hope that AK can build on the ok-ish start he made to the year at Kapalua and get it done here (i say ok-ish rather than decent, he had 2 good rounds and 2 average ones)

Tough weather here. It's funny though coming from NY. They call puddles floods here. You should not be golfing today because you'll wreck the course but usually it doesn't rain on that side of the island EVER. It rains in the mountains almost every day but very rare Hawaii Kai gets rain like this. It's a pretty standard rain most mainland people (besides AZ and texas) would be familiar with. Here theyre treating it like the end of the world. It stopped at like 9 and drizzled some since then but I walked to lunch. I'm about 5 miles from Waialae.

Appleby interview , he is gaming the 2 ball putter he bought in the pro shop last week after his "59" putter went missing. He said it was good enuff to shoot 8 birdies with last week, good enuff to give him the lead today. Who needs a limited edition custom built tour putter ? Apparently not steve. LOL That is pretty ballzy to leave your fav stick out of the bag and go with a off the shelf setup and come out on day one in the lead.

He hasn't kept things going today, and that happened last week as well.  If he can find some consistency, he will be tough to beat.  That's definitely an "if" though.

Charles Howell III started his season with a 68.  I still haven't figured out what he loves about this course, but he is almost a guaranteed top-five finish at Sony.  I'm hoping he keeps it up and gets another high finish this year as well.  He is off to a solid start.  Another name that keeps sticking out is Matt Kuchar.  He is turning into Mr. Consistency on the PGA Tour.

In a thread about slow play on the Tour a month or so ago, I wondered how well players would do if the U.S. Open still had a 36-hole final day. We're going to see how today.

There is a 36-hole final in the Sony, and each group has 4:30 between 3rd-round and 4th-round tee times. http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r006/tee-times.html

Neither Ben Crane nor Sean O'Hair are in the field, so this might work out. Rory Sabbatini must be in hog heaven.

Like in the old Open, the order of play in the 4th round is based on 2nd-round scores. We could well have the winner come from a group that finishes an hour ahead of everybody else. Back in the day, "leader in the clubhouse" actually meant something. It could today, too.

This should be fun.

Anybody see that shot by Steve Marino where he was standing in a bunker, hit a 3 wood like a baseball swing and got on the green in 2 on a par 5. That was a hell of a shot.

Stack System’s marketing materials inflate apparent swing speed and distance gains through selective presentment of data without qualification that purported gains are not the result, in whole or part, of its training protocol and products. * Yes, I'm joking about abbreviating both "SS." SuperSpeed wants: A judgment that the Stack System has disseminated false and/or misleading information in violation of federal and Illinois law. The deletion of all false advertising distributed and recall of all packaging containing false advertising and a requirement that Stack System issue notices (written or otherwise) to that effect to all current distributors and retailers of its products and all distributors with whom Stack System has done business in the past eighteen months. Written confirmation within 30 days of an injunction detailing the manner and form in which Stack System has complied. An order that Stack System disseminate corrective advertising informing consumers, the trade, and the public of Stack System’s unlawful conduct. 3X all profits received by Stack System as a result of its unlawful actions. 3X all damages sustained by SuperSpeed (as a result of Stack System’s actions) The cost of the action All reasonable attorney fees All other relief to which SuperSpeed are entitled and such other or additional relief as just and proper. Oy.
    • I'm not doing this for the hundred and twentieth time. Sorry in advance, but you get the massively abridged version. Those guys also benefited from the weaker/shallower fields. Also, Watson's career doesn't overlap with Jack's like many think it did. Tom is nearly a decade younger. Jack won only like four majors only after Tom won his first. And Tom won more British Opens than he did all three of the other majors combined, as it was his specialty (not Jack's). Arnie's career similarly doesn't overlap Jack's as much as many think.   Jack would also tell you Tiger was the better golfer.
    • Weaker depth of fields for sure. Some of the top level guys with Jack were pretty awesome. Tom Watson had the lead on the 72nd hole of the 2009 British Open, an event where Tiger missed the cut. Old Tom was almost 60 years old. Jack himself at age 58 finished Top 10 at The 1998 Masters and scored better than Tiger, who won The Masters by 12 shots just a year before that.   The success of both Tom & Jack in older age gives some hope that maybe Tiger can find the magic again at some point. He’s still trying to figure out how to build the stamina for 72 holes after the leg injury. I would love to see him jump on the leaderboard in the coming years. I know a lot of people have given up on him at this point, but that was also true from 2014 to 2017 with the back injuries. He had a hell of a resurgence in 2018 & 2019. Would be fun to see it again.
    • Perceptive rules question by caddie unlocks Tour pro’s ‘dead zone’ relief A perceptive rules question by Xander Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, unlocked “dead zone” relief during the Wells Fargo Championship.
    • I ran across an interesting new clip, Johnson Wagner went into that spot with the Referee who allowed the relief.  Apparently there was a perfectly reasonable shot to be made, as Johnson clearly demonstrated, so relief from the TIO was perfectly appropriate.
