I am currently using wilson staff ci9 irons and am looking at the new Taylormade TPMB forged irons that come out in march, i am wondering do you think as they are blades that a 19 handicapper would be able to hit them well. My ball striking is quite good and i know i would have to hit them before buying but i wondered if you think blades would just be too hard to hit for a 19 handicapper.

Blades such as the TP MB are usually played by players with a very low handicap and great ballstriking.

I'm not going to say that you shouldn't get them, you should definitely try them if you are interested in them, but I would go for a more forgiving club. The TaylorMade TP CB or MC are probably a more suitable option due to the added forgiveness they have.

I have seen very few players game blades because there are a number of similar options that are slightly more forgiving.

Play what you like, but be aware of the fact that blades are the least forgiving iron design there is so, unless you hit the ball out of the middle almost every time, they're probably not your type of club.

I've read a bunch of people on this forum suggest blades to 25 handicappers because you learn how to play the game quicker seeing as you get more feedback on good shots. The fun thing in golf at your handicap is to hit some good shots and see the handicap go down, something that will be easier if you are gaming a GI iron.

I can't recommend that you spend the money required to get brand new blades.  They will be a lot harder to hit than your current sticks.  If you want to try blades, or practice with them I'd recommend spending $50-$150 to get a set of used blades on ebay, craigslist, or your local golf shop.  I just saw a set of Wilson Staff Fluid Feel blades at a local golf shop for $40.  Pretty good shape, really only need a new set of grips.  Look for some Wilson Staff, Macgregor, or Titleist Tour Model blades.  Give you a good feel for what a blade requires, and also completely playable.  I put my 1982 Tour Models in the bag about every 5th or 6th round, and frequently when I go to the range.

Not trying to sound like a d*ck, although I'm about to...

If you're a 'great ballstriker', why are you off a 19? On principle, muscleback blades probably wouldn't be your thing.

....

TM do have other forged options in this new generation of irons. Maybe the cavity back, or partial cav, or a blended set might be a better call.

@OhioLefty.....D*CK!!!!! LOL...

We're no one to to give true opinions on what equipment to get, but yes, it seems as with your handicap, blades might be a tough choice. I gotta recommend the Mizuno JPX-800's, holy crap are they nice!

I'd find a few single blades on Ebay first and take them to the range, and see how they feel.

I would recommend mp53 more forgiving than even JPX 800 pro. I use one. Almost can't tell the difference between mr friends r9 in terms of forgiveness. Heck my friend hits mp 53 better than his r9 and can't believe how forgiving 53s are. And of course it also has that traditional Mizuno blade look

I say don't get these irons for the main reason being they will be very difficult to hit. going from the store where they have computers and mats to on the course is a huge difference. stay with the game improvement clubs for now. my friend who just started playing golf a few months ago bought mizuno blade irons just cause he felt he could do well with them and today in fact, calls me up and says he is getting rid of them cause he can't hit them well at all. I have been playing golf for a few years and just now upgraded to a players iron.

From my very limited expercience in golf i would say go for it, and the reason why is based off personal exp and opinion. When i was 19 i played golf for three months and shot 100 twice using blades, and and at the start of those three months i had never really swung a golf club. I'm 21 now and and it just took me 6 months since I started playing to break 100 using nike slingshot 4d which are extremely forgiving clubs. When using blades the clubs make you become a better ball striker since mishits are are going to be terrible. Blades make you become a better ball striker which is something forgiving irons do not do, and in reality they reward and reinforce bad habits in your swing. Now when i learned to play i went to the range at least three times a week and it was uhhh so ugly at the start with the blades, but it has taken me almost 7 months with GI irons to get to the level it took me 3 months with blades in terms of ball striking. If i could do it over again i would have picked a far more demanding iron then what i was hearing on the internet, and dont believe that blades are impossible to hit they will force you to improve and over time you will be able to hit them

of course, no matter what irons you start with, you will have to learn how to play golf regardless. but, game improvement irons are called "game improvement" for a reason. if you go with these tm blades, then stick to it and don't give up on it only after a few times. cause it will take you quite a while to get used to them

There are some qualifiers you should meet before considering buying blades or players irons,

First, can you put up with the crap people will give you for buying clubs above your skill level?

Second, are you committed to the game and getting better?  (Or are you stuck at a 19 handicap and can't envision getting much better?)

Third, if you are committed to the game are you going to be okay with struggling with more difficult clubs before seeing improvement?

Fourth, do you have the patience and budget to get properly fit?  (Everything from shaft, to lie and length, etc)

If you can say yes to all of those then you could be ready to at least consider buying them.

Maybe his short game, putting or driving aren't worth a crap, but he hit's everything well with his irons.

Your right about the awful short game but drivings quite good. Lol.

I have literally never seen someone like that.  Golfers who hit their irons solid are at the very least competent in every other area roughly 99.9% of the time.

Why not demo a set and decide for yourself?  IMO, blades arent as hard to hit as people make them out to be.  If you arent making a good swing, you wont get a good result no matter what clubs you use.

I would stick with Ci9s wilson staff makes very nice irons and at a 19 they would be exactly what you are looking for in an iron. I do agree the new TM forged iron line looks very appleaing.
