So, I love what I do, love my job and my family, but I think I want to get serious about golf. My wife really doesn't seem to be to like the idea of me spending more time about the golf course, especially with a 23 month old. I already golf 2-3 times a week, and I think this would require me spending more time at it, I think. First things first, I need to join a local golf association to get my GHIN #, so I Can get my official GHIN handicap, then on to tournaments and other events. I, however, want to take a lesson or two from a PGA pro soon, to get my swing looked at. Do you think I have the right mindset here? Is there anything you recommend I do differently?

Do what makes you happy The only problem is your wife and kid. If you wanted to get serious about golf you probably should have done it before having children. Playing 3 rounds a week is a lot when you have a young kid

The gospel from Tank2 2.  And he's right, your day job is in your avatar. At least for the next 16 yrs and 1 month it is. It's a great gig too so don't let it get you down. Wait a minute you're playing 2 -3 times a week now? In the snow?

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

If you don't mind having a golf widow and a kid that resents you in 15 years, then go ahead and play 5 or more times a week.

I think the fact that you have posed the question is answer enough that you know you should not skimp on the family man responsibilities in an effort to reduce your handicap by a couple of points.

Right?

To me, it's about something I'm passionate about and want to get better at. None of you know my story, but I can tell you I've fought for everything I have today. I value my family first and foremost, and my wife is okay with me playing 2-3 times a week, as long as it doesn't take any time more time away from each other and from Christian (my son).

You know, I didn't really start getting into golf until I got out of college, and now I think back, and I know if I had the passion for golf then as I do now, I would've gone to a golf management school or made golf my career. I'd definitely like to get better, and I know that getting into tournaments and doing more with the game would take more time away from home, so that is my dilemma.

Alo, thanks for the tough love. The goal is to reduce my handicap and get better, but I also asked for advice about what I should or could do different regarding my golf game, not my family. I know if I play 5 rounds a week, my wife will divorce me.

I know that my wife is happy. She wants me to be happy, and is easy going enough and down to earth enough to understand that a guy needs time for him and his "boys".

@TheRoadDog- I wish. I just played my first round yesterday. I Was going 2 times a week at most last year, but played 3 times a week several times (a lot of twilight 9's, not whole rounds). The snow is all melted though!!!

You sound like a good dude who isn't going to ruin his family playing a game.  Lots of people have though.

As far as what you should do: I say get some lessons and be a range warrior whenever you can.  Figure out what it is you want out of your game and how you want that to fit in with your life.  Then make a plan to make it happen.

The wife loves going out to the range with me, as she does like to hit some balls herself, so that helps out a TON. My son loves his new plastic golf set I bought him at Walmart for $5.

Make yourself a net to chip/pitch into and get one of those putting greens for your house. Those two can help you out a lot. I have no clue what physical shape you are in but you can workout at home while watching your kid. Try to work in your game while watching him.

I like the idea of including your family. My dad was a huge golfer when I was growing up and he got both my older brother and me a plastic set when we were little tikes. We have some great home videos of my brother and me hitting in the back yard. My brother never took to golf and my dad never pushed it. I, on the other hand, fell in love with the game and now it is a favorite thing for us two to share.

WRX...For sure, I'm working on my game at home plenty, not really working out as much, but definitely need to! I'm a big family guy, my wife didn't have a father growing up, and I'm going to be there for our son 100% of the time. I don't plan to push him, but I for sure wouldn't mind if he also fell in love with the game. DOES ANYONE HAVE A GHIN handicap? How much did you pay for it?

    • Looking to play in the Severna Park Golf league and it got rained out the first three weeks. I know the course is being renovated so it is not in great shape but the location is easy for me and I would love to meet some other golfers in my area. Anyone here in Maryland Annapolis area?
    • I like to look at the positives.  Overall you are fairly consistent down the center with most shots 20 yards or less off center.  On most fairways that should be in play.  Sure, you had some very short duds, but also if you look there is a good cluster in the 110-125 yard range.  Sure, we would all like to be longer, but knowing your typical shot is more important than trying to hit the 7-Iron 175 Yards.  Just take more club for longer shots and do not worry about it.  Your distances may increase as you improve over time so do not get caught up on that now.
    • Day 552, May 7, 2024 Played nine holes with @NatalieB with irons only from her tees. Didn't really finish out any holes, just hit the irons and approaches and some chips.
    • What has gone downhill? Have you been practicing properly, filming your swing, working on exactly what he suggested without straying? My thoughts are that your results/outcomes from a lesson a year ago probably aren't all that relevant anymore.  And carry distance is far more important than total distance. Total distance is going to vary significantly based on course conditions.
    • One thing that has helped me tremendously is to spray the club face with foot powder when I am on the range. Seeing ball impact can be quite helpful if you are hitting shots all over the place. It's not the cure all, but a good little thing to do on the range. The other thing, and I will forget to do it, is the pre-shot routine. Find me a spot a foot or so from the ball in-line with my target, take my stance, take the swing.  Sometimes you take a BS practice swing with no thought. Make it deliberate.  As far as swing thoughts. I have 3 check-points. First is set-up, Second is my take away, Third is my downswing. I cant explain what I think I just know in my mind. Its a feeling that I have that feels right and experience has shown that if I follow those 3 thoughts more than likely the outcome will be what I was looking for. Now, thinking about the feeling and executing it properly is a whole different thing, that;s why I practice, I used to be over a 20 handicap, I am down to a 15.1 in about a year.  I feel like its good progress. the goal is a 10 by the end of the year. If I make it great, if not, hey at least Im not in Gaza. LOL
