Hi was going to be making a trip down to Frederick Maryland and was wondering what course you guys recommend?  I know of at least 4 courses I've heard are very nice there.  Maryland National, PB Dye, Musket Ridge and Whiskey Creek.  Has anyone played those?  If so what one do you recommend?

PB Dye and Whisky Creek are both awesome courses so either one of them would be a good choice.

I live in Maryland.  I love Musket Ridge.  I think it is one of the top courses in the state.  Worthington Manor is a course that holds a lot of US open qualifiers.  It is another course I like.  Maryland National is a step below them but is a good course.  It has one hole that they kind of wedged in, but it is always in good shape.  I don't care for the PB Dye course.  Its a tricked up course.  Lots of railroad ties and blind shots.  It is hit or miss for conditions.  I really don't like Whiskey Creek.  The layout is long.  I hit a bunch of Driver, 3 wood or Driver, 2 iron.  The conditions are never great and are better in the spring then in summer or fall.  There is always a green that is burnt up or has a dirt patch.  Good luck.  If you like BBQ try Black Hog downtown.

Musket Ridge has nice conditions but the course is by far the easiest of all of them.

Thanks for the input.  And I love BBQ so I'll defiantly check that place out.  I doubt it is but would that place happen to use a vinegar base sauce?  Most places up here don't.  I used to live in Wilmington NC and theres a place down there that uses a vinegar sauce and is the best I've ever had.  Regardless I'll check it out.

My choice around Frederick would be Little Bennett GC.  It is a municipal course but course layout and maintenance is superb. You may find better condition on Whiskey or Worthington but if you like strategic courses, check it out. You won't be disappointed.

I second everything he said about Little Bennett.  Though I haven't played the others.

CBS Local Offers (groupon-type thing) just had a $36 special for PB Dye. Finally going to play it this year! Going to try and make a day of it and maybe play 36 (Whiskey Creek / PB Dye).

About 2 years ago there was always coupons for PB Dye in the paper in fact I don't think I ever paid over $50 to play it. I haven't looked recently to see if they are still putting them in the paper but it would be worth keeping a eye on.

Hollow Creek is not a long course, but has undulating greens.  I have played a few times there and each time the course is in great shape.

I did not like Whiskey Creek as I was expecting a lot more, and the course conditions were not up to "par" for the price and hoopla about it.

Worthington has a great layout and will test your game and all the times I have played the course was in great shape.

PB Dye has too many blind shots for my tastes, and the greens were very beat up last time I was there.  Many closely mowed areas around the greens makes you pay if you do not hit and stay on the greens.

    • From what I’ve read, it was in the manufacturing process and how the covers were nicking pretty easy.  He has had to resource his factory as the one used earlier is now a TM owned facility.  Initial reports seem to indicate the redesign is going to be a winner…
    • Day 129: 5/4/24 Stack training but could not certify my warmup speed. Dealing with a pulled neck muscle. Chips and pitches at a local course for about 15 minutes.
    • Typically less than 50. I find this can be affected by the "CART" signs on a given course. I don't like taking my rangefinder out of the cart and carrying it around to the green. I am very fearful I will leave it somewhere.
    • First ever holed out greenside bunker shot! It's crazy it took this long to finally get one during a round, but the cold streak is officially over. Hole 6 on the Palmer Course at PGAN. I hit my driver like 225 into a really stiff wind, then worm burned a hybrid into the bunker. I was about I dunno, 40-45 feet away. Birdie! Let's go! The red Xs the approximate location of each shot.  Really fun!!
    • Day 23: Rained all day, so no ball hitting. Worked indoors on top of the backswing feel, and also putted around the living room working on bead.
