I need some help from veterans, when teeing off with an iron how high do you have it set up?

My setup is, maybe 1/8 inch (maybe less) above the ground and I address it. Another question comes to my mind once I addressed it. Do I hit it on the downswing like I normally would, do I sweep it or hit it on a upswing like I would my driver?

Thanks in advance.

I Tee it down so that the Tee is sitting about 1/4" above the turf. Whether you sweep depends on what your hitting. If you have a long iron the ball position will be similar to a fairway wood, just inside your left heel, and you should sweep the ball of the Tee. If you have a medium or short iron the ball should be positioned about 4"-6" inside your left heel and you should hit down through the ball taking a divot.

When you do this with your med/short iron does it break the tee everytime? I can't imagine it staying in one piece if you do not modify your swing at all and swing down on it the same way you would if the ball was on turf.

If you get your swing right then you should take a divot after the ball, not before it. The club should drive down through the ball. That way you should contact the ball not the Tee. Saying that my swing isn't so consistent and I probably do break my fair share of Tees.

I'm with BigDon on this one. I have all but the very top of the tee exposed while teeing up a shot with an iron. (Assuming you have a well manicured tee box).

Exactly the same for me as well. I really hate it, though, when I come to a tee box that hasn't been mowed in three months. That makes teeing off with an iron a little more difficult for me!

with a tee you create less spin therefore longer distance more roll.

for me i tee the ball very very low, to where it is pretty much sitting ontop of the grass from my 2 iron down to my 6 iron, and from my 7 iron to my wedge i do not tee the ball at all, i just fluff up the grass and play it off of the grass due to the fact that i'm looking for the ball to hold more in that situation than with my longer irons and i get a better pinch on the ball off of the turf.

I love your fluffing grass blades suggestion. I'll try this out this weekend.

With short irons, I bury the tee far enough so that the bottom of the ball is just off the turf (not off the grass, that can be too high). I think of this as trying to replicate a perfect lie in the fairway

With long irons, I tend to set the tee so that the bottom of the ball is just above the grass (assuming a tight teebox).

everyone is different.

I play in a one club tournament every year (6 iron all day baby!) and when I want more distance I tee the ball up higher, swing down on it hard and create the divot in front of the ball

Now, usually when I play a normal round, I don't use a tee with my 2 thru 5 iron (fluff grass), and I use a tee tee'd up very low with my 6 on up (except holes under 110yds - gap wedge no tee

Just my preference...

Oh yeah, and I use a broken tee, not a full size one

jack nicklaus said "any time you get the chance to tee the ball you should"

on the tee box with an iron i always tee it up...no matter what iron it is (55* or the 1 iron) the tee height is always the same...the ball is 1-2 mm above the ground...

i have seen people that tee irons 1/4 " to 1/2" off the ground but i wouldn't recommend that, for the simple fact you dont want to ingrain an iron swing that is a little higher because in the fairway you have to get all the way to the ground.... so it's more of a preventing a bad swing habit than it's not the right way to do it kind of thing.

as far as breaking tees goes....if i am swinging well then the club will just push the tee further into the ground...on my slightly off days i catch things a little fuller so the tee breaks almost every time....to me it doesn't matter because i rarely bother with picking any tees up other than ones used with my driver....which means i basically dont pay attention whether it breaks or not. Most people can prettty much tell when they are hitting things a little heavy without the tee to tell them.

I would definitely recommend teeing it up alway...the patch of fluffy grass is okay but it would seem to me that you would get inconsistent spins out of this due to the fact that it will compress or pinch different amounts depending on the fluffiness of the grass, the type of grass, and the height of the ball to the ground....personally i cant imagine getting that much more spin from a fluffy lie (basically a ball sitting up in semi rough) than from a tee....just my opinion

WHO'S JACK NICKALAUS?? haha, j/k

I was not telling anyone to tee the ball up high, i'm just saying it's my preference in ONE tournament I play with one club to add distance because I don't have another club that will go further...It's the only way I can hit my 6 iron (178y) up to 200 off the tee...

In the lower irons, I believe people get their kicks off of being able to use a tee, but my approach is different. Amateurs get too used to using a tee with those irons, and get that thinking when they find themselved in the fairway "man I wish I could tee this up." This way, I feel confident hitting the shot off the tee box, or the fairway, not changing my swing, and not fluctuating ball height.

GOLF IS ALL FEEL, and you should do what you feel comfortable with ALWAYS! Some people make it too analytical, and those are the people that struggle with short irons, chipping, and always putting...So, tee the ball up, or don't, only you can decide what is right for you...

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
