I am looking to buy a fairway wood, a 4 wood, as I dont have one, I grew out of my last ones. I did actually have the r11 preordered but teh site messed it up so I cancelled it. Now Im thinking do I actually need to spend that much on a fairway!! Now Im thinking of buying anything cheap even second hand even like an old taylormade vsteel which will be next to nothing. They were good or is there actually that much of a difference in newer technology that Id be better buying something newer.

I'm quite happy with my SQ2 4-wood, and I like (but not enough to pay the upgrade cost) the SQ machspeed 4-wood.

If you're going older, look at Mizuno F-50 and F-60.  Those were great fairway woods!

They make the non-square version, too.  There's also (I think) the VR 4-wood that feels nice, although I haven't seen the ball flight.

Had a Ping G15 4-wood that I found very easy to hit. There seem to be plenty used in nice condition on eBay for $100 or so.

I had a G15 4-wood that I used for about a year. I let my son take it over as he out grew is standard flex TM 3 wood (G15 was stiff flex).  Anyway, I got fitted for a new fairway wood, hitting several new clubs, and ended up with the new Callaway RAZR 3 wood.  Wow- what a club.  This thing is simply a rocket.  If you are looking new, give the RAZR a look.  good luck.

I also had a Nike SQ 4 Wood. i Would find myself never seeing much of a difference between my 3 & 5 wood. I am a higher handicap and i am sure the guys with lower handi caps would see a bigger difference. I rather have an extra wedge instead of 2 woods. I will look and see but for those with swings speeds under 100 4 wood travels farther than a 3 wood anyway . Google it and I am sure you can find it. I am not saying agree or disagree with it but its a great play either way.

I have a Callaway FT 4w (2008 model) with a Diamana Blueboard 73g. I think they are some great woods, but seem to get no love. I bomb mine on and off the tee, it could be the shaft...lol. I would give one a try if you are able to find one for a great price. I got mine brand new on globalgolf open box for 89.99 last year and after I traded my old wood I got it for 40.00 with shipping.

Some options from Callaway:

Model Loft Stock Shaft
Diablo Octane 4W 17º Dia Octane FW graphite 60 gr. | mid.T | Low kick
FT 4W 17º Fuji E160 65 gr. | mid.T | Low-mid kick
BB War Bird 4W 16.5º * Callaway BBUL graphite (specs not available)

* Conflicting info, some sources say 17º

From the small-shop club makers, Tour Edge Exotics fairway woods have cult status among competition amateur golfers. Exotics from the CG3 and CG4 models feature a 16.5º 4W with a square face. Options are available in stock shafts. See if you could find one from earlier models on clearance, as the full-price is above $200.

Thanks guys I had a look around my local shop nevada bobs and they have very limited selection and trying anything is pretty much out of the pictur because there isnt alot of demo clubs.  I have however came across the titleist 909f2 and I love it deeply. I had a look for second hand ones to maybe try but they didnt have any just one brand new at £155! which is a bit of a rip off since the new ones are out.  on ebay they go second hand about 80ish but I want to try one and the only option is a 3 wood or 5 wood.  On top of that I seen the G10, G15, the nike one above on the net but again getting them and trying them is not going to be easy.  I dont know what to do I mite just order one of ebay and pray its real and works or bite the bullet and buy something brand new that is in a demo club.

Process:

  1. Get recommendations on woods to try.
  2. Search around online and find 5 different prices for each of those models so you have a minimum and maximum they cost.
  3. Go to a local store/range/club and try each of the models out until you find one or two you hit well and really love.
  4. Look at the cost difference between them and if the best is the most expensive, decide if the extra you get from the second best to best one is worth the extra money.
  5. Buy the one you like from the cheapest shop you found.

I did the above with my 3W; Started out trying a TM R9, TM Burner, Ping G15 and Titleist 909F2. Narrowed that down to the Ping an Titleist but tried a Yonex Nanospeed 3i after a shop recommendation. Found I hit the Titleist and Yonex both really well but the Yonex a bit better. The Yonex was £40 more than the Titleist so the question was whether I'd hit it £40 better over the time I use the club. I bought the Yonex. :)
