Wow I had an Eagle today on the first hole! Its a 380 yard par 4 and the tee box was up a bit today so I figure it was about 370ish. I tee'd off with a real nice 5i shot that got some nice roll and was about 160 yards out. Got out my 7i and hit a nice shot that hit the front of the green and rolled all the way into the cup. Such an awesome feeling!  I was stunned when it went in.

What is hilarious is that I have not even got a birdie yet.  I have had plenty of chances but can never make the putt! I had one lip out on me the other day.

That's a great feeling, I got my first (and only) last summer on a short par 5 - nice drive, a 3 hybrid to the front edge and a 20-footer which *just* dropped in like Tiger's famous chip. I'd like to say I was composed and walked up calmly to get it out of the hole like I do that sort of thing every day, but actually I jumped about like a crazy person whilst screaming like a pre-teen girl at a Justin Bieber gig.

I have never holed out though, it must be a fantasic feeling, congratulations to you without doubt! I've never even really come that close...I spanked the pin on the full once with a 100-odd yard GW...which then proceeded to squirt off into a bunker :(

Congratulations!  The first one is always great.  Not sure about anyone else.  But actually remember my first eagle.  I was 13 playing a very short par 4 (like 290 from the whites).  hit driver then pitching wedge to the right edge of the green, trickled downhill to the left and rolled in.  I was jumpin up and down like an idiot kid.  Still remember it.  Congrats man!

Congratulations, I had my first one the other day as well. Par 5 about 510 yards, big dog leg left, at the Crenshaw Course at Barton Creek in Austin.  Cut the corner with a perfect tee shot about 290 and then hit a great 4i about 220 and sank the put. It's a great feeling. Actually had my 2nd eagle of the day and all time a few holes later. 3 putted for par. That's golf.

Its funny how I am usually pretty pumped to get pars but if I two putted and missed an easy birdie putt its like it is the worst thing in the world :)

Congrats man!

I have never had an eagle on US soil, I drove a 256yd par 4 in the UK to about 8ft and made the putt. I have had soo many eagle putts (& chips) here in the US, but I just can't seem to get it in the hole.

Congratulations! I made my first (and still only) eagle last year, which was a true fairy-tale to me. 7 years break from golf, first round, new set of clubs, 9th hole, 130 meters, 2nd shot, 9 iron! ... and I was hooked on golf again! @SGSII via Tapatalk

Hell, I'm 29 years old and jumped up and down like an idiot kid when I got my first eagle today!  Chipped in from 1 yard off the green on a double breaking roll!  So sweet..best part is I was playing with my dad.

My philosophy on golf "We're not doing rocket science, here."

Unfortunately I was playing solo so I looked like a bit of an idiot when I was jumping up and down.

I got my first (and only) eagle this season. Was a 510 par 5 that doglegged right.  I cut the corner with probably my best drive of the season, and hit a 4 hybrid to about 13 feet.

It was pretty sunny that day, and I hit my second shot and couldnt see it at all.  I knew it was good, and I knew it was on line, but I pretty wasn't sure on the club.  The fairways were running very hard close to the greens, so I clubbed down.  As we were pulling the cart up, I saw my ball about 10 ft from the hole, and started a dead sprint to it.  My friend yells to me, gives me a "what the hell are you doing look" and I stop and realized one of our foresome was lining up an approach,

We all had a good laugh about my childish sprint, then I buried the put.  A little downhill, right to left -- dead in the heart.  Incredible feeling.

Haha yeah it was awesome, I practically ran to the hole as well to make sure I actually holed it and it did not just roll off the edge of the green.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
