Hi Guys!

As I mentioned, I'm returning to the game after a long absence. I've been to the driving range and while my shots go far, they're certainly not as controlled as they were before.

I won't even say how my short game is - it was always my achilles heel. But now I'm considering going to actually play a round and I'm nervous!

I'd have to play on a weekend, so it's bound to be busy, I'll be paired up with 3 guys, and although my shots go far, I'm nervous I'll be all over the place - whacking in and out of the rough, sandtrap, and water hazards.

Should I just wait longer or bite the bullet? It's been TOO long. I feel like a newbie again :(

Hi Guys!

I wouldn't mind if you joined our group...just play ready golf, drop a ball instead of taking prolonged search party for a lost ball, and consider it as practice and not worry about the score.

If the group is not cool with that, chalk it up to a bad draw that you landed with a group of arses. However, I think the majority of people you hook up with will be OK. Good luck and have fun!

Go for it! I find myself worrying the night before tournaments, but when I play with others, whom i dont know, I tend to find it alot easier to concentrate. I dont want to look bad, so I really pay a lot more attention than on just a recreational round or for league.. It becomes too routine.. You'll do fine, dont stress about it! Show them up

Hi Guys!

Get out there and play! When I started, I thought I'd have to be a scratch player to not make a fool of myself. Just go play. You know how to play quickly, so select your club on the way to the ball, take a practice swing, and hit.

You won't be the bottleneck in the group. It's the 20-handicapper who thinks he's the next Tiger and takes fifteen practice swings who will be the bottleneck :)

As long as you keep up, nobody has any right to comment. I rarely find a player who would denigrate anyone for playing poorly. 99% of the men and women I see around the course are still capable of remembering when they were at that stage in the game.... some are still there.

I returned to golf two years ago after a 12 year break. I wasnt at your level, I was playing off a 4. My first two rounds back were a 105, and a 98, and I can honestly say they were the most fun rounds I have had since getting back into golf.

I think you'll suprise yourself on both how well you do, and how much fun you'll have!!!

Sounds like you would fit right in with most of the weekend golfers I know...

If I'm in a 4-some and there's a duce or single behind I'll let them play thru, if it's a 4-some, tough shit. It takes 20 minutes just to get someone to play thru. Golf is a game of patience, that's why I don't understand why people worry about the people behind them. If you're on pace for a 4 hour 30 minute round, then don't worry about it.

Do not worry about it at all, I work at a golf course and believe me, more than 75% are in the same league as you, if not worse. Just go up and make a good solid swing without trying to kill it, square up and you're golden right down the pipe. And please for me watch the ball!

I would say to go out and have FUN. Don't worry about the bad shots but concentrate on the good ones.

Remember why you play the game and not how you play the game.

The only caveat I would add is if my foursome isn't keeping up with the group ahead of me. At that point, I ask if my group if they don't mind playing ready golf until we catch up...

Thanks for all your support, uys - made me feel a lot better. You know, I know most golfers would respect me being out there playing period but there's always the one grouch who has to moan and groan about something and he's the one I am anxious about. LOL!
tiff :)
PS - I am making a tee time for next weekend. I'll let ya know how it goes, but I'll have to ride - no way I can walk and carry this soon. I'm outta shape. Got on my treadmill this morning and felt like dying after 20 minutes. Going back for more right now. I'm training to be a lean machine again! :)

Go have fun and report back. Ignore the grouch. I wonder how I'd deal with such a grouch. If he complained to me about multiple practice swings (something I rarely do off the range), I'd probably grouch when he does the same.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
