I have made it down to about an 11 handicap.  3 years back.  I currently hit the Hogan BH-5's and want to go to the next step.  I am looking for suggestions for a new/used iron set.  I am not opposed to pre-owned.  What would be a better set of irons for me.  I have found some deals on Taylormade R7's.  How much better are these than what I hit?  I am not partial to any particular company.  Just what I hit well.  I can go to Golfsmith and hit a bunch of different irons.  I am just trying to narrow the field.

What say you?

I would say go into testing out clubs with an open mind.  If some one here says the ping whatevers are the best.  Or some one says the taylormade whatevers are no good.  Then that might stick in your head when trying them.  I play some pretty old irons but i love them and they are for me.  Since you can try out different sets of irons go hit them and you will know your firsthand feedback.

I'm not sure what would be considered better clubs than what I play.  Are mine SGI or GI irons and what would be the next step up.  Are R7's truely better than what I have?  This is where I get confused.  There are a lot of clubs on the market.

I doubt the R7's would be any better than what you have now.  What do you mean "next level"? If you want new clubs, go hit a bunch and buy what you like. If you are trying to justify buying new clubs by telling yourself they are better than what you have you are kidding yourself.

So what are you saying?  My clubs are as good as it gets or as good as I'll ever get.  As far as levels go, there is everything from SGI to Blades.  I don't know enough about them so I am asking on here to more knowledgeable people than I am.  I don't have to justify buying new clubs, if I just want to buy some clubs I'll go by the most expensive tour blades.

I am just trying to play better golf.

What plays good for me might not play good for you, and if you are looking to start getting more dialed in then I would seriously look into putting your money into the right shafts for your game. You can't go wrong with just about any name brand forged club, but the shafts you choose will make the most difference. Try to call around and go set up a fitting. Try the Project X, Nippon, etc. until you find a setup that performs the way you want it too...

New clubs of any "level" won't make you a better player.  Practice will.

Something I've discovered about clubs, is that certain ones are effected by technology less so than others.

Drivers tend to have a large turnover and can have an effect on imparted spin and distance. Fairway woods aren't far behind that.

Irons, at least in my opinion, haven't been effected very much by technology in the last 5-6 years. There have been a few changes but not enough to have a significant impact on your swing. If your clubs are less than 7-8 years old then the only effect a new set will probably have on your swing is mental.

Obviously, having them custom fit for you will help, new clubs or old.

I consider irons and putters clubs that I don't look to replace unless they become damaged, personally.

In terms of your BH-5's, they are basically game improvement irons cavity back in line with something like a Titleist AP1 or Mizuno JPX-800.

If you really just feel like you want new irons (sounds like that's really what you want) you could decide to get a similarly helpful set of irons or something else. It's choice/taste and what you feel like doing. It's really not about level's it just doesn't work like that, you have Lee Westwood & KJ Choi hitting what can only be called SGI irons and most people would dream of hitting irons like they do.

Taylormade Burner Superfast TP 2010 9.5 - Matrix Ozik HD6 Stiff 44.5" (0.5" tipped, 1.5" butt trimmed reweighted D1)
Ping Rapture V2 3strong wood 13.5 - Diamana 63 g35t Stiff 42.5"
Cleveland Launcher DST 2hy 18* - Ultralite Diamana Red 74 Stiff 40.5"
Mizuno MP-52 3-PW standard loft/lie/length - Dynamic Gold S300
Titleist Vokey Spin Milled GW 52/8*
Titleist Vokey Spin Milled SW 56/14*
Spalding TPM-4 Putter (circa 1988)
Bridgestone B330RX balls.

no one's addressed his actual concern about the fact he wants to play better golf....with other clubs than what he has, ie he wants (i'm assuming) to go from a cavity to more of a players iron? that being said, you could go to any golf galaxy/dicks/edwinn watts and get fitted for a set that you hit well...but clubs won't get you from an 11 to a 5 or less...practice will

not gonna start a p*ssing contest with you. players irons aren't the only 'forged' clubs out there...btw. and "cheers" is an expression someone might share with a friend over a drink, or something to celebrate with comrades, (clearly you haven't experienced such friendships) and in my case it was sarcasm directed back at you. my apologies, clearly you're suggestion to the op regarding shafts should be the only suggestion he follows.  i'm not one to start something, but if you'd like, send me a pm and we'll talk.

So far I've had some good success with Maltby forged blades.  They are a little more forgiving than traditional blades, not in the mainstream, so somewhat resistant to marketing hype, and a fully built custom set runs about $300, a little more if you want them spined/tuned.  Nearly every one I've tried feel pretty good with the exception of the Tricepts which feel a little tinky to me.  Other than that, they aren't quite Mizunos, but you get a great deal and save $500.

No, what you suggested was that the (6) previous post before your initial post did not address his original concern. You are wrong old timer, face it and move on. Oh, and I'll pm you my number, CHEERS... lol, my granddad actually says cheers.

Bottom line is I just want to play better.  If keeping my clubs and doing somethinge else will help, I'll do it.  Maybe a couple of lessons.

Believe I've been back plying for 3 years and since I last played in the 80's there has been some real changes.  One way for me to learn is to ask questions on here.

You can teach an old dog new tricks.............lol

CHEERS.....(does it mean the same from a redneck?)

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
