OK, let me first start of by saying that I have never had a hole in one. Why am I posting in this thread you ask? Well, the summer I decided to start to learn how to play golf (I found my Dad's old set of clubs in the corner of the garage and was curious) I had a near hole in one. I hit a few plastic balls in the yard that summer before my Dad brought me to a local par 3 course for my first ever round of golf. The first hole is probably 120 yards and I hit a 5 iron (LOL) that hit the flag stick and stopped a couple inches from the hole. My very first shot on a golf course. Damn thing rolled up on the green, hit the flag and stopped a couple inches away. Funny thing is there was a pretty big wait on the tee and everyone who was watching was amazed. "Great shot kid", some said. I was like, "isn't that what I'm supposed to do?" Needless to say, it's been all downhill since then

Well, I haven't had any aces...but my father did have one about two weeks ago while I was hitting a round with him. It was on the 5th hole at The Willows, in Independence, KY, a par 3 of...165 yards, if I recall correctly. He used his 3 wood for that shot. Before teeing off, he was like "I'm going to bring this ball over that sand trap and put it on the green", and by God, he played his slice perfectly...that sucker landed in the hole. I didn't notice until some lady on the other side of the road screamed and I looked up....no ball in sight.

I tried to one-up him...the only result was me chunking the hell out of my 4 iron, landing my shot in the lake.

Bar tab: About $15...there were only four other people in the clubhouse at the time.

Course: Twin Falls Municipal
Hole: #2, 194 yards
Club: 5 iron
When: March 24th 2007

As I was teeing up I said "just let me hit this green once!!!". I hit the ball a little thin, bent down to pick up my tee in disgust and started to hear "go in" I looked up and saw the ball roll the last 3 feet then disappear. The rest of the round sucked after that.

Course: Cut Bank GCC
Hole: 5 Downhill 195 to a small flat green.

I was 8 years old. Swung as hard as I could at a driver, landed it halfway there and watched it trickle down the hill, onto the green, and into the hole! I didn't quite understand how cool that was. My dad and uncle (who I was playing with) were the ones that REALLY got pumped.

Now I've been trying to duplicate it for the past 17 years. I've come close a few times but never actually got another. Pretty funny that I aced that hole when I had to hit driver, and now I hit an 8 or 9 iron to the green and can't do it again!!

Year: 1999
Course: Townsend Ridge Country Club -Townsend Mass.
Hole: 165 yard 17th down hill with green sloping left to right.

Club: 7 Iron

It was my company outing and I wasn't playing very well ( usually don't in scrambles) As I walked to the tee a guy in my group said, " If you hit the hole in one, you can drive the SUV on weekends, and I'll drive it in on weekdays.."

I hit a 7iron with a draw and it hit the left side of the green and the ball rolled into the hole. I won the 1999 Mercury Mountaineer!

Hehehe NM, I feel your pain!

I've been playing this game 35 years now (10 or 12 of them with a single digit cap) and no aces for me either!

I'll bet though, like me you've hit more shots inside of 18" than you can count. The closest I've ever come to an ace though was probably one of the worst "good shots" I've ever hit. It was in a business tourney, the hole was playing right at 155. I hit a really thin 7 iron that couldn't have gotten 20 feet into the air but was dead on line. It one hopped the guard bunker in front of the green and rolled up to the lip of the cup. Couldn't see the hole from the tee so we had no idea how close it was until we got there, then no one could believe how a shot that ugly could turn out so good. There was also a "closest to the pin" prize for that hole and we got a good laugh out of it when I got my prize for it.

Also, I've had at least 10-12 eagles on par fours. To me, that's harder than a tee shot on a par 3 since you are playing it as it lies.

My most memorable eagle came when I was in college. I was playing a college bud in match play and we had gone stroke for stroke almost the whole round. At 18, a longish par 4 we were all even. I faded a drive around the corner on the dogleg right hole and had about 150 to the pin, dead center in the fairway and a perfect lie. I stroked a 7 iron that was on line with the pin from the minute I made contact. The guys standing behind the green let out a holler so I knew it was a good shot. When we got there, it was in the hole. The guys at the green said it took one small hop, settled and rolled about a foot gently into the cup!

That shot won me a 12 pack of beer, so for a broke college student that was a very memorable shot and about as good as an ace.

One of these days I'll get a real ace though and I'm sure you will too!

Hit nice high draw (my normal shot - I am right handed). It actually landed left of the hole and for some reason kicked right. Bounced a couple of times and rolled in.

This occurred during a tournament that I didn't pay up for closest to pin or skins. The tournament director did pay for the plaque that now sits proudly over my fireplace.

Ditto. No aces, but many to inches.

My fear, too, is that I'll get a hole in one when our course has temporary greens in the very early spring or very late fall (i.e. winter) or I'll get one "for real" but it'll be so windy, cold, or rainy that I'll be the only one on the entire course.

I honestly think that if I ever got a hole in one hitting a bad shot, I'd deny it or simply keep my count at zero. Who would want to re-tell the story of their shank that hit a cart and a tree before finding the cup, or that rolled through a bunker, hit a rake, and found the hole?

Also, I've had at least 10-12 eagles on par fours. To me, that's harder than a tee shot on a par 3 since you are playing it as it lies.

I think it's probably tougher too, BUT I have heard this argument made:

a) there are more par 4s than par 3s at a normal course b) you often have a wedge, whereas most par threes are longer than most approach shots into par 4s.

I can attest to that. I was complaining about the fact that I've yet to make one, and someone told me "If you want a hole in one, play with Don."
