well i'm gearing up for the season and i need some new wedges. i'm most likely getting the titleist sm4 wedges. but here's my problem. i can't decide to get 2 or 3. my irons right now are 3-pw and i have a 53*, 56*, and a 60* wedge. that's 15 clubs including the putter, driver, hybrid, and 3 wood. since my hybrid and 3 iron are both the same loft and i hit them roughly the same either off the tee or ground, what i'm thinking of doing is taking out my 3 iron and get the 52*, 56* and 60* wedges. is that wedge overkill? i use my wedges probably the most. my other choice would be to keep the 3 iron in the bag and just get the 52* and 60*. any advice would be appreciated.

Decide on whether or not you want to keep the hybrid or 3i in the bag...don't keep both obviously.  Then, you'll be able to carry 3 vokeys if you want.  If you are uncomfortable hitting 1/2 - 3/4 shots with PW, then I would suggest getting a GW (51, 52*) to go along with a 56* and 60*.   Find your yardage gaps with the wedges to determine the makeup / proper lofts.

My PW is 46*  and I carry a 52, 56, 60.  My yardage gap is roughly 10-12 yards between each.  I'm very comfortable with that setup.

Oh, and good call with getting Vokeys.  I'll never play a different wedge :)

thanks. that's exactly what i was thinking. as of now i've been hitting my 53* 110yds, 56* around 100yds, and 60 anywhere inside 90yds. i haven't been hitting the 3i much anyways. much more comfortable with the hybrid.

Sounds like you've already got a good setup.  Your wedges losing their grooves?  I'd concur with dropping the 3i and going 52˚, 56˚, and 60˚. I need to get a gap wedge myself, as the last iron set I got has a 46˚ pitching wedge and my other wedges are 54˚ and 60˚, which leaves me hitting too many touchy 75%-95% PW shots between 115 and 130.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I currently have the vokey 52*-56*-60* I had this same issue a few months ago and I just had to be real with myself, I dont ever use the 3-iron, if its my second shot on a par 5 I'm either laying up, or going for it with a hybrid or a 3wood. When it comes to long par 3's if I can't reach it with a 5 iron or lower I'm hitting a hybrid. If you'll really think about how often you actually use the 3 iron you won't miss it. Also on a related wedge note, good call on the vokey line. I play the 695 CB irons and my pitching wedge is just about grooveless so I'm considering picking up the 48* to replace my PW.

yeah my grooves are just about completely gone. starting to get a little too rusty as well. and they've got some pretty nice dents. haha so i'd say it's time for an upgrade.

Go for it! Nothing shaved strokes off my game like getting my scoring clubs where I liked and had confidence with them. Also, despite giving you the versatility from 120yds in, it also helps around the green, I love my 52* for long running chips.

Just decide whether to remove the 3i or hybrid and gear up on the wedges. Your setup is very similar to mine.

I'm looking at adding a GW to the bag myself, and potentially replacing my current wedges (Cleveland CG14 60degree, and Taylormade Tour Burner 55degree) which I have to do by 2014 anyway to continue to play in a few amatuer tournaments a year.

What are everyone's experiences/thoughts on wedge choices in general?  Cleveland, Mizuno, Nike, Titleist?  I currently play Mizuno MP-52s, which I love, but not sure how their wedgers compare to the other wedge makers.  Obviously I know I'll have to get out to the pro shop and compare a few... but just wondering what other people are happy with.

Mouellette31 - hope you don't mind me piggy backing on your question.

    • Lemme guess….’ We don’t want any confrontation so nobody says anything.’ Sheesh…..Call him out and fix the problem.
    • Went to a PING fitting day today. Going to be ordering a G430 Max 3w with a 75g x-stiff shaft at 5w length and a 3h. I forget what my fitter did with the shaft on that but she told me she’s going to email the club the specs of everything. The 3w combination we found pretty quickly. As for the hybrid, we tried a bunch of different head and shaft combinations for that distance with mixed results. Then she handed me the 3h and I took three swings with it and knew it was the one.
    • Yeah, this isn't sandbagging. It's outright cheating. He should be banned.
    • That’s quite a generalization. It’s clear that you don’t like water but there are plenty of us that drink it just fine. My daily intake is usually about 20oz of black coffee, 16oz of soda, 8oz of milk mixed into a protein shake, and anywhere between 30-60oz of water. It doesn’t even need to be cold and I kind of prefer it closer to room temperature than cold. I quite like the taste of tap water, with sole exception being the tap water at Magic Kingdom (it’s terrible). I can’t stand when people bring me tap water with a lemon wedge in it. I didn’t ask for lemon in my water.
