Congratulations to Bubba - Why Bubba Hits it a Mile?

First, I would like to congratulate Bubba on his win at the Masters. About a year ago I did a research on two centers in golf, and studies almost 100 tour pros swings, to learn as to how their two centers in their body worked.

I was specially intrigued by Bubba's swing. He has the most extreme and most exaggerated spine angle at impact than any other player on the tour and this stretch of the hips generates tremendous amount of power.

I have no idea as to how he is so consistent with his ball striking - All I can say he is a phenomenal talent

Here is my research.

It kinda helps he is a 6'3" big southern boy, who is insanly flexible. Do you see how high his hands get in the backswing. He just gets tremendous power. He also talked about how he doesn't restrict his hit turn in the backswnig, he really gets a full turn, his hands get high, and he is tall. His potential for power is tremendous.

I am not sure big is the word I would use to describe Bubba. 6'3 180 is pretty skinny.  Now being 6'3 has some biomechanical advantages and he is flexible but that is true for a lot of pros.  Bubba also hits up on the ball (versus someone like Tiger that hits down) which is worth some yards. At the end of the day, a good chunk of the reasons that these guys can bomb the ball is that they have better muscle composition (for golf) than most of us.  Some people just have more FT fibers in the right spots. Training can definitely help but it will not put in what god left out.

Not really, If you compared Dustin Johnson to Bubba Watson, i would put Dustin Johnson as one of the best Athletes on tour and Bubba as probably on of the most gifted with Hand eye coordination. They both bomb the ball, there both tall, there both lenghty, they both have very wide golf swings and get tremendous spacing between there hands and there head. But there are also some shorter guys who hit it a long way. He's got good genes for hitting it long, but i wouldn't put pro golfers having some sort of genetic predisposition to golfing than other people.

I don't want to have this debate again (it has been done in the 10k hour thread) but if you don't think strength and power have a strong genetic component, I think you are crazy. Swinging a golf club 125 mph is just like throwing a baseball 95mph+ or running a 4.4 40.  99% of us will never do any of those things no matter how long we train You can get a lot better at  pretty much anything with practice but at a certain point you will find a genetic limit.  That being said good golf is a lot more about strength and power. There is a reason why a guy like Jamie Sadlowski is not on the PGA despite the ability to bomb the ball 30 yards past Bubba and why guys hitting 30 yards behind Bubba routinely beat him.

But when you can hit a wedge 160 with a 40 yard hook out of the pine and round some trees your on to a winner!
