Did I get screwed on my new clubs

Hey everyone,

I am trying to decide if I have buyers remorse or impatience as I am struggling to get comfortable with my new clubs.

I've been hacking away now for 5 years using the Big 5 sporting good special clubs (Tour Crafts I believe). I have never been able to get the slice out of my driver but I started hitting irons really good and strait.

Well this year I decided I wanted to upgrade clubs and start playing a bit more.

After hitting multiple 6 irons at the golf shops simulator, I decided on the Callaway Graphite Shaft (My previous clubs were steel shafts) Warbirds. Simulator was telling me I was hitting it average 168 right down the middle. Sales guy told me the graphite would add about 2-4 mph (My swing was mid 80 range) on my swing which would add distance to my hits.

Anyway, I have been out playing 4 times in the last 2 weeks and went to the range 3 times (2 Grass, 1 Mat) in that same time period and I cannot hit the ball strait or at the same distance I was getting with my Big 5 specials!

The slice that has been constant in my drivers is now presenting itself in all of the clubs in my new set.

Is it my swing?

Is it my getting use to the new clubs/ lighter weight?

Do I need to setup differently with Graphite Shafts?

Any Advice is much appreciated.

My father-in-law recently got new clubs after several years with old ones.  We dragged him into golfsmith for a fitting (reluctantly - I don't know why) and to surprise him with new clubs.  He eventually came away with Mizuno JPX's and didn't really like them at all for a few weeks at least.  I would go so far as to say he hated being "forced" to get new clubs and didn't even want to get rid of his old mis-matched pieces of junk.

Fast forward a few weeks, and now that he's gotten comfortable with his new clubs, he loves and raves about them.

So maybe it just takes time to get comfortable??

You probably just need to give it time and get used to them. A lot of people hit straighter on matt when they are being fitted for irons. Then find out that they do not hit as straight on grass untill they make a few adjustments. Some people even swing different when indoors. Why, I do not know. Graphite shaft can be a little whippy and open up the face more than your steel set. Good luck figuring it out.

With a handicap of 20 there's a possibility that your swing is inconsistent. It could simply be a case of you hitting great shots during the test of the clubs but not having such a good swing subsequently. I'd suggest sticking with them for a while before you throw the towel in as you might get used to them and hit them well. It's also very unlikely that the fitting place hacked the simulator to give you false information to make you buy clubs that are bad for you. ;)

MiniBlueDragon is right. Its not the clubs. Tone the swing in front of a mirror one hour a day for a week then hit balls.  I bet the clubs hit better.

Mid 80's 6 iron swing speed is pretty fast.  I'm surprised he recommended graphite shafts.  Don't mean to stir the pot...but just saying I know a lot of players with mid 80's 6 iron swings speeds (yours truly included) and none of them swing graphite.  All have steel shafts around stiff stiffnesses, and a few Xs.

From what I have heard switching from steel to graphite can bring out issues in a swing,

The lighter club makes imperfections more obvious.

Just stick with it, maybe with these clubs you will be able to fix your swing up so that you don't slice with any of your clubs
