Hey everyone, I started golfing last summer and bought a complete TaylorMade Burner set but am needing some wedges. I shoot in the 90's if that helps any, and find that my short game costs me a lot of shots. The set came with an A wedge (50 degrees I think) and P wedge (45 degrees?) and that's really all I have besides an old sand wedge that is giving out on me. I'm usually good from 100 yards out with my A wedge but am not very comfortable using it around the green and don't make the best chips with it, sometimes skulling it or just misjudging the weight a lot. I'm looking for advice on what kind of wedge I should get so that I can hit bunker shots as well as make better chips around the green and to fill that void from 100 yards in.

I can't afford to get 2 or 3 wedges right now so I'm hoping there is something I can get to fill the void for now by just getting 1 wedge. If you guys don't think that's possible I'd like to hear that too. My buddy who is a 4 handicap suggested that I get a 58 but I just wanted to get a few more opinions from here as I'm heading out of town to hopefully get one tomorrow.

Thanks in advance all.

I picked up a used 52* Titleist Vokey on e-bay for about $50. I use it with a 3/4 swing for everything from 75 and in, except right around the greens, lately I've been pretty good with an 8 iron using a putting stroke.

My Bag:

Burner 9.5

X 3&5 Woods

DCI Gold 3- PW(48*) + 52* Vokey wedge

56* sand wedge

If you wanted to add a SW and an LW, look around at the golf shops. Depending on their supply chain, different companies are offering good deals on never-been-hit wedges from a couple of years back. Certain two-fer deals can give you a pair of wedges for under $100.

Also, if you bring in non-Burner wedges, determine the distance gap between the AW and SW. Be aware that wedge shafts are often only 1/4" different in length, as opposed to 1/2" for numbered irons.

TaylorMade offers little archiving for the specs of clubs not currently on the market, so you'll have to look up the specs on your own.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Thanks a bunch for the replies guys. There are not many options here to choose from in terms of sports stores, but I did manage to try out a few wedges on a simulator today and picked up a 56* so far. MIght try to add another through Ebay to get something cheaper. Thanks for the input!!! Appreciate it!!

I use my 56* wedge from within 60 yards and out of greenside bunkers. Absolutely vital club in my bag. There have been times when I've used other irons with a putting stroke, but you need to have a clear path to the pin so the ball can run.

If you can only get one  wedge, make it a 54* MP T-10 from Mizuno. Get them cheap on Amazon -- new or used. They are the 2010 model but are super clubs and there are still new ones available for $70.

The sole on these Mizuno wedges allows you to open and close the face and keep the club nicely grounded. I use my 54* around the greens most of the time. Very versatile club. I can not hit a high flop with it, but can hit a lot of different shots.

Not sure what you mean about your old sand wedge giving out on you. If you can use that club in the sand, consider keeping it to use in the sand. Nothing dulls the groves like practice in the sand.

I just picked up a 60* mp t series wedge and I absolutely love it. Hands down my favorite club. I have a thread about inexpensive wedges somewhere that has some "cheaper" wedges in it. They look good with some custom options. Worth looking into.

Thanks for the help guys! I have the 56 now so looking to get a 60. I checked out the classifieds, nice wedge set there but unfortunately I'm lefty. I'll definitely take a look at the posts in that thread you pasted though.

Academy sports had left handed wedges for $0.88. Yes really

Check out golfsmith.com. They have a Lynx LXW wedge in 52, 56, and 60 degrees for $20 each. My 56 is a true "go to" club and I just ordered the 52. Great spin from these clubs and a very solid feel for a "budget" wedge that originally sold for $80.

i have the burner set and go with a 54* for sand and 58* for everything else. i think i got them for ~$150 for the pair, although they're cheaper now, probably ~$100 for both and that's for clevelands, i'm sure you could find used ones for cheaper.

i bought my wife an old rusty cleveland SW for $5 at golfsmith and it works great.

I will never make a purchase from GolfSmith ever again. Not only are most of their prices inflated beyond belief, but their customer service is terrible. I've had 2/2 bad experiences with them and will never go back. I would rather deal with Golf Galaxy or a pro shop from my past experiences.
