I have been looking at the Top-Flite XL complete set and the Walter Hagen XLR set. Do you guys have any recommendations for a 5'9" 185lb'er??? I am brand new to golf and just looking for a decent beginner set I can learn this sport with.

Top-Flite XL - http://www.topflite.com/global/en-us/golf-equipment/golf-clubs/xl-mens-set.html

Of course, I'm not set on either of these. If you have an other suggestions, please let me know!

I actually just got the Walter Hagan XLR's this year.  I'm just getting back into the game after a long hiatus.  I really like them.  Obviously they're not Callaways or anything like that, but they do the job.  They seem to be pretty well made, and for the price I figured they'd be good for me for at least a while.

If you're looking for good beginner irons, Rock Bottom Golf is running a special until midnight for Callaway Golf - Diablo Edge Irons Steel 4-PW/AW for $269.99 which is a great deal.  They aren't a complete set, but I paid close to $700 for this same set last year.

You might want to check them out at a local store today and then order them online.   They also have some great deals on drivers, woods an putters so complete your set.

Either of these sets would be fine. You should, however, buy them in person so you know if you can hit them or not.

Since you're a beginner, your swing will change a lot day to day. So, a detailed fitting won't help you much. But, consider getting a basic static fitting. The fitter will check the shaft length, lie angle (how flat or upright you hold the club), grip thickness and shaft flex to see if the clubs are right for you. The above sets can be tweaked as needed. But, at 5-9 you fall in the average range for clubs.

Also, get some lessons. It's much easier to learn the game if a good pro shows you the basics. A former tennis player who switched to golf combined lessons with finding his first set of clubs.

The Hagen or TopFlites would get you through the first couple of seasons. They are solid, well made clubs, just not fancy.

Note: If you will be playing in business settings with serious (and hopefully not too grouchy) golfers, you might consider asking the golf shop about a used set of medium-level irons and woods. For reasons of simple snobbery, some people will look down on golfers who play with a basic Hagen or Topflite set.

If you're playing just for fun, ignore the Note: paragraph.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Yup.  So if you can find an established brand name set for a similar price, it might avoid blows to one's ego (even though for a beginner it likely makes little difference).

Rockbottomgolf.com to me as well is a great place for bargains.  Besides the Cally's, I noticed they have both an Adams Tight Lies iron/hybrid set, as well as a 1/3/5 wood set for $149 and $119 respectively.  So for $270 you could outfit yourself with a "better" brand set--and Adams makes some of the most forgiving sticks around (yes you'd still have to get a putter & bag but you could easily get both on a clearance site for less that $100).

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

    • I can't say that I remember a lot of individual putts, but I do have one specific memory.  The first time I played the Old Course, I had hit a pretty good drive on the 6th hole.  I had about 60 yards left, and due to the swale in front of the green, there was no chance of flying a wedge on or near the green and having it stop on the green.  My caddie recommended either a running 7-iron chip or a putt, and I took the putter and a pretty hard swing.  The ball rolled over humps and through hollows, disappeared into the swale in front of the green, and re-appeared heading right at the hole.  I ended up maybe 12 feet away.  The caddie turned and held out his hand to shake mine, and said "Now THAT was a golf shot!"
    • For the first time since 2021, I made a 3 on the 12th at Stoneleigh.    395 yards, something like 80 feet uphill, I hit a solid drive and a 7-wood to inside a foot.  Even I couldn't miss that one.  I feel like I haven't played a lot of golf this year, but I'm making decent progress.
