The last time I played an entire 18 hole round was in early June and shot a 108 on my home course in Greenville, NC which was designed by Lee Trevino. Well, since then I have bought a year-long membership to a driving range in Wilmington, NC (where I go to school) and spent around 12-14 hours a week working on my game.

I just returned home a few days ago and made it out to walk 18 today and shot an 89! I am pumped. The hard work paid off.

Here's the breakdown:

3 pars, 13 bogies, 2 double bogies

Hit every fairway

No GIR's

2 one-putts, 16 2-putts

0 3-putts

No sand, water, or OB

I am a really short hitter, probably only about 200 yds off the tee, but I am consistent and play everything safe. I had never even broken 100, let alone 90, before so to cross off two major milestones in one round is pretty exciting.

Any tips on how to move down into the lower 80's?

1.) Identify your power leak in your current swing and fix it.

2.) Start hitting GIR.

I got my first and only hole in one at Ironwood a few years ago, but enough about me. Make sure you do the correct practice. Dont just hit balls for a few hours. Work on short game and putting. Also if you cant hit it very far, make sure you are playing the correct tees. Congrats on the score.

I remember the first time I broke 100 ....and then I played the other 9. but seriously that's a great milestone ,keep up the work ethic and the 80's aren't far away.

If you're going to school...I can guess you probably aren't an old guy. 200 sounds very very short for even a smaller young guy. I'm about 5'9" and 160 and I can hit 275+ more than a few times per round. If you're hitting every fairway, but it is only going 200 yards...you must have a very compact and abbreviated swing with your driver. I mean I could be wrong but that's the only thing I can think of.

Everyone that reads this thread needs to give the OP a skin to add to his reputation.  Is he the only user on TST or the interwebz that admits his average distance is sub 300yds?

I'd say your assessment sounds about right. I'm 5'8 160 lbs. I didn't have a driver until about a week ago so I have only been practicing with 5i (can't hit the 4i or 3i very well) an up for the last couple of months. My basic (par 4) strategy was just get in on the fairway, hit an iron, and then take a 30-50 yard pitch hole followed by 2 putts. I played the drives conservative just to make sure I had a nice clean lie on my second shots. I choked up and kept the swing compact to minimize any chance of errors. Now that I have a driver I can start working on a bigger back turn and longer swing. I also just ordered a TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 4H to give me some more juice than just the regular 5i.

My iron play, wedge game, and putting are all solid. I just feel that if I could drive it ~250 with consistency I would be looking a breaking 80 pretty quickly. It's exciting stuff, I have definitely "caught the bug."

I suppose it depends on what you consider solid.  If by solid, you mean you are making contact, then I assume you are right.  Not hitting GIR's means you still have work to do on your iron play.  Obviously longer drives will help with that as well..     but every GIR you hit on par 4's gives you a chance to birdie or 2 putt for par.

Congrats man!  I'm still trying to get into double digits, so I sure wouldn't mind breaking 90 while I'm at it either...If I could keep my head down and stop topping it I might have a chance!

Don't be afraid of swinging for the fences. Obviously don't do stupid stuff like over-rotate and flipping your wrists...but take some full swings at it with your driver. Depending on the course you're playing at, I might rather be hitting 270 yards and in the rough than 200 and in the fairway. That is a 6-7 club difference for most people!

Congrats....I almost lived that story yesterday....Won't get into many details on your thread but my personal best has been an even 100 (twice) and yesterday shot a 92....could have easily been an 89.

Great feeling

    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
