I used to carry a 60 and 56 wedge.
The 60 I only use as a full swing from 60 yards out and very short chips where I only a little landing area.

I then replaced my 56 with a 54 because my game required extra yards (distance) I could not get with my 56.

So now I carry 54/60.

Recently some of the oldtimes I play with have talked me into chipping and lobbing with my 54. So I have been trying 1/2 and 3/4 shots with my 54. I can hit my 54 a max of 80 to 90 yards. The 60 maxes out at about 60 since I have a very high launch angle.

This has left me with the idea of pulling the 60 out. Of course my fear is once I do this I will come across a shot in which I would need the 60.

can anyone recommend a reason to keep the 60?

I am makinhg a point of trying not to use it. The only problem is that my 54 runs alittle too much. But taking out the 60 might lighten the bag for me!

Should I dump both the 54 and 60 and use a 56 (which seems to be the answer to both)

What is everyones wedge set up?

What do you use a 60 for?

Are my posts completely incoherent?

48-54-60

I use the 60 for most bunker shots, when I need extra loft around the greens, and from decent fairway lies 85 and in. I tend to chip more with my 54, but yesterday the greens were so wet that I needed to fly it to the hole so I used the 60. I would have a hard time without it seeing that I use it more than my 3 or 4 iron.

Maybe to the average person, but a real golfer can relate to your ramblings. If you were to dump the 60, I would recommend going with the 56. I think you would lose some versatility just keeping the 54 by itself.

I've always been told to limit your gap in degrees of your wedges to 6 degrees max. I use 48, 52, 56 right now. I use to have a 60 LW but it just didnt seem necessary for the talent level I am at. Now around the greens when needed, I just open the face of my 56 up and everything is good. To each his own I guess.

I fell in love with my 60* this year, when you get used to use it it's such a feel in that club but it needs some practise. I use it for most shots between 15-50 yards and never with full swings, I also use it in bunkerplay when i'm close to green. It's the funniest club in my bag.

50-54-58-64 (64 is just an experiment -  nice to have with summer hardpan fairways)

I play a 46* PW and I've carried just a 56*, a 51*/56*/60*, and a 54*/60* and of the three, the 54/60 combo has been my favorite. Good gaps between wedges, without much overlapping. I prefer having the extra long iron/wood in my bag over a wedge I rarely used. The only setup I'd consider other than the 54/60 combo now, is a 52/58 combo to lessen the gap from PW to 54*

Was 50* 54* and 60*

Now 50* and 56* and really liking the 56 out of bunkers and anywhere I was using a 54*. Find those extra two degrees are often very nice from rough near the green. It opens up beautifully to flop when needed.

If you only have 1 of them, go with a sand wedge, I like the 56˚ loft for that club. If your Pitching or Gap wedges are under about 50˚, a 54/60 combo works great. It's not that different from the sand.

I want to switch to 54/60 myself, due to yardages. I want to hit my sand wedge around 110 and have perhaps 90 with my LW. Right now it's like 95/85 with a 56/62 combo, and I want to drop my Gap Wedge which I hit like 120. I get the 100 yardage a lot and it's a pretty big sand wedge for me, especially if it's a bit more than 100, but it's a really stupid distance for my GW that matches my irons and is a lot hotter than my SW. I just don't feel that comfortable at that distance and it comes up a lot.

I have the power to get it there but I have to deloft it and swing the heavy club hard with a really solid hit. My LW is almost able to hit that distance because it's lighter and easier for me to hit solid due to the low bounce and friendly shape. Plus I can fly the SW there but it will spin back a mile with that much speed. Right now I prefer to punch my PW or run a 7i up rather than fly something that range.

They both work for me with pretty much everything besides their full shots though. I'd keep the 62 if I had to, I use it around the greens a lot.

Thanks for all the responses.

Right now I carry a 46 pw and 50 GW.

I hit my PW 110 & my GW about 95- 105.

I have a 16 degree launch angle, combine that with a 60 degree wedge (or any wedge) and I sent the ball sky high. This must cut down on some distance.

I always try to aim to land the ball in front of the hole. With the 54 the ball hits and runs past the hole. With the 60 it hits in front and stops way short, which is why I have been going with the 54. Atleast going past the hole has a chance to hit the hole. Not getting to it never gives me this chance.

Since I only carry 13 clubs (I go from a 5 wood to a 5 hybrid, which is an entirly other topic of neurosis) I guess I could add another wedge, but I try to keep my bag light, since I walk....

Your signature indicates that you play E6 balls. Great ball but they roll out more than many balls. I could not get them to stop from any short irons or wedges. RX stopped better. Callaway HEX Chrome stops as I like and are my new ball. I want the ball to land and stop "near" its pitch mark on full swings.

If you really like the E6's (they were crazy long for me so I can understand why you may love them), and you want a bit less roll out, I say carry the 60* as either your 13th or perhaps your 14th club. Unlikely that you will ever stop the E6's without going very high.

1. Play with just a PW and the 54. See what shots you can't hit with those two and tweak your wedge set to fill that need.

2. Be open to the possibility that different courses might be suited to different wedge sets, because you find yourself hitting different kinds of wedge shots on one course than another.

3. If you want a ball that stops on a dime, try the e5. I tested some balls with my driver and the e6 won the distance contest hands down. The e5 won the spin test around the green, so I chose to play that one.
