I don't belong to any clubs, and don't ever play in tournaments, but people always ask me my handicap.  I generally tell them how many over par I typically shoot, but this doesn't take into account slope and rating.

So, is there a way to get a somewhat more accurate yet unofficial handicap without joining a club?

Thanks!

If you only want unofficial, it's easy enough to do the math yourself.

(adjusted gross score - course rating)*133/slope gets you your differential.

Average the best 10 differentials from your last 20 scores and multiply by 0.96, then drop off anything past the tenths place, and voila, there is your index.

Also, learn about equitable stroke control based on your index.

Certainly, if you don't want to do that you can google and find a program out there for free I imagine.

Yahoo golf handicap tracker is what I use. It has most courses complete with distances, rating, and slopes from all tees. Just pick the course you played that day ,check which tees you played from, and then enter your score. It will do all the math for you. It keeps your handicap and your handicap for each individual course you've played. Very simple. It will also keep your complete scoring history.

Sincerely, Jim

Why unofficial? Get a real one and be over it. Costs a couple of dollars a year. That's all.....

there are many websites out there. some free. I use www.thegrint.com which is free and very easy to use.

I used to have ghin, which is paid but really good if you play in offical tournaments. there are a couple of friends of mine who uses oobgolf or the yahoo tracker - try those - i hope it helps

I made a spreadsheet to calculate mine and to keep track of my rounds.  Plus it allows me to get all nerdy with graphs, etc.  If you are interested, message me and I can email you a copy.

Get an iPhone or Android app.  Most of them have a means of tracking your handicap.  For instance... I use Golfshot to track my scores.  And my Golfshot handicap is currently 4.2 which is up to date (factors in my latest round).  Whereas my USGA (SCGA) handicap is a 4.7.  The reason my Golfshot handicap is lower is that it is using rounds played in the last 10 days which are helping lower my index. Whereas my USGA (SCGA) index is only updated every 15 days (lame).
