Mike Weir's new swing finally showing results

Looks good, and his ball striking is already showing signs of improvement, hitting almost 70% of his green and fairways. But most noticably is his distance has shot back up and he's hitting it like he did in '03. A bit unfortunate that he was -6 and 2 back and then collapsed but at least he's seeing some results. Something to look forward to for Canadian's and fans.

I agree, and he is the kind of player who has shown that he can bounce back from a bad finish... I sense a few more top 10's and a spot on the Presidents Cup team is on the horizon for Mike...

I like Mike Weir and his pre-shot routine and was suitably impressed why the way he played at Congressional.

On the other hand, Stuart Appleby yet crashing and burning going into the last round as leader. Shame.

He's always had a preshot waggle but you can see with his "new" waggle that he's really working on getting the club inside. The announcers did make reference to his added distance off the tee a few times and it seemed whenever he hit a good one in the fairway he was a decent amount ahead of Stricker every time.

Any one else notice that the guys working with Plummer and Bennett seem to all be thin guys. Baddeley, Weir, Faxon...

He's always had a preshot waggle but you can see with his "new" waggle that he's really working on getting the club inside. The announcers did make reference to his added distance off the tee a few times and it seemed whenever he hit a good one in the fairway he was a decent amount ahead of Stricker every time.

I know that the balls were really rolling on the fairways but I was amazed at how far he was hitting some of his drives, I think he averaged about 305... and I think he weighs about 150 lbs soaking wet!

Yeah, hard, fast fairways or not I have watched enough golf to know Mike Weir is typically not that long. Incidentally it was his length that hurt him on the par 5 (I think it was the 9th). As the announcers correctly stated, he hit it just long enough to get into trouble.

I am pretty sure he has averaged about 280 most years so he has certainly added some distance. He also changed from Ping to TaylorMade for his driver, not exactly sure when he made the change though...

Hmm. Interesting. I know he's been on the Taylor Made staff for quite a few years now so I always assumed he was always using a TM driver. I do know he used a Taylor Made driver when he was winning in 2003 and 2004. Probably should have never switched.

I was a bit off on that, he switched quite some time ago... He was using the Ping driver when he first won in 1999 but his next win in 2000 was with a TaylorMade driver...

LOL! Damn, I had no idea lumpy was working with them. I guess those other guys just bring the average down

I do often here the word "flexible" associated with their swing and I also heard Jason Gore had to go back to his old instructor after giving it a shot.

I've always said it. He is, at 5'9 155lbs.. pound for pound one of the longest hitters on tour. He is now averaging around 285 for the year. In 2003 he averaged around 286 which was considered a long hitter back then... and then dropped in that stat each year since. I've seen the guy play at Shaunessy and out drive Bob Tway and John houston by 20 yards virtually every hole. I remember watching the 2004 Nissan Open and him hitting it 305 yrds. up hill, in the rain on 18 at Riviera. Or the goofy long drive contest they had at the skins game when Mike out drove Vijay. I guess people dont remember that stuff because they dont follow his stats and progress closely..

Hitting it 320 on that 600 yard par 5, he had something like 255 to the front edge, 288 to the hole. It was not out of the question for him to go for it but was probably not the right decision off that lie. He miss hit it, the ball squirted right because it was well below his feet.. it had nothing to do with the fact he couldnt get it there. Hopefully this "less transfer swing" will have Mike playing back to his full potential and into the top 10 again in the next few years.

Ahhh, but you admit it probably wasn't the right decision. Nobody ever said your boy Weir couldn't get there and nobody's trying to take anything away from him. I'm not a Mike Weir guru like I think you might be but I've always thought his wedge play was a strength and it's messy in front of that green.

I'm not a Mike Weir guru like I think you might be but I've always thought his wedge play was a strength and it's messy in front of that green.

You could argue it either way, he needed birdie or eagle badly so im sure that was the reason him and brennan decided to go for it. Either he hits it good and he's a hero or bad, and he hit it badly. It shows guts and its good to see he's still got some fire in his belly.. even though it was questionable off that lie.

I believe Cleveland is right.. in 2003. I think it was an R580 he was using.

I was just checking the stats and I see that Mike is now 85th on the money list with $708,842 in earnings... I was looking at the whole list and I am amazed at how much money is out there... If someone is bored they should add up the totals for all 246 players (I think it might take a while) I would love to know exactly how much prize money has been given away so far!

just check out the purses from all the tournaments and add them together. You dont need to add up the totals
