A freak who likes fairway woods and irons more than Hybrids

I have yet to find a hybrid I like more then long irons or fairway woods.  I am Demo-ing the New Titilest 5 wood and I like it.  I can more easily hit it off the deck and get good distance.  I am so impressed with the Titilest fairway wood I am going to give their Hybrid a try.

Am I the only one?

I hate fairway woods, I can't hit them I just can't.  Maybe its cause of the course I play (not a lot of need for a fairway wood and very very long length grass on fairways makes it hard), but I am waiting around for the New Titleist Utility club to add to my bag.

You are not alone my friend. I also just don't get on with hybrids.

I replaced my old ping eye 2 persimmon 5 wood, with a cobra baffler hybrid, a few years ago and since then have changed 4 or 5 times.

I hated each hybrid slightly less than my previous one and bit the bullet earlier this year, purchasing myself a ping i20 5 wood.

Best decision I've made for ages, absolutely love it!

I can double hook a hybrid so I carry a one iron instead of a hybrid. Everytime someone I know gets a new hybrid I have to try it out but unless someone builds a course that has a bunch of U shaped holes to the left I will have to keep hitting long irons.

Titleist has smaller fairway heads - that makes them more playable. The problem is that they are not always for the slower speed golfer.

Other OEMs have gone to mega fairway heads and bigger hybrids that are smaller than the typical fairway (let's say140cc verus 115cc), yet their hybrids still offer confidence -- and they offer shorter shaft lengths that lead to more consistency; and they are more playable out of more lies than the typical fairway.

For the above reasons, I've gone to one fairway (17-18.5) and 2 hybrids that are 20+ degrees. I play a 42.5 inch fairway, a 40.75 hybrid and a 40 inch hybrid.

And yes, Titleist hybrids are fine clubs - the 913 seem smaller than the 910 ... not as confidence inspiring IMHO.

You are not alone, my relationship with hybrids has been a rocky one. I just cannot ever seem to find one that I can consistently hit. The worse part is my misses with the hybrids tend to be way off line. I never miss that bad with long irons or fairway woods. I recently added a Titleist 913f 5-wood to my bag and I love it. So much easier to control than my hybrids. The only problem I have with it is I hit it a tad too far, but as far as problems go that's the best one to have.

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
