Hey guys, as it stands right now, my current setup is this: driver 9* fairway 15* Hybrid 19* Hybrid* 21 Irons 4-pw Aw 52* Lw/gw 58* My question is: do I need both hybrids? Or should I take one of them out and go with a classic 52* 56* 60* wedge setup? Thanks for the input, -Luke

What's the lofts of your irons? To me it looks like you may have a similar club in the 21* and your 4i, if your set is modern and too much gap between PW and the 52*.

It totally depends on your game, and your handicap is "TBD".

What course do you usually play?  Whats your handicap?  How long are you off the tee in comparison to the tees you hit from?

If you find yourself like me, who is pretty long, the third wedge not close.  However, if you are hitting the driver to 180-210 on most par 4s the hybrid might make alot more sense.

We need more information to help you.

For example, I rarely bag my fairway wood at my home course.  We only have three par 5s and they are fairly short and I can reach two with driver-18* hybrid.  So I play an extra wedge in that case.  However, if my home course had 4 600 yard par 5s OR I could only hit it 230 off the tee that wouldn't be a good decision.

Everything we tell you at this point is a guess.  Tell us more.

I have the titleist ap2 710's my handicap is around a 10-11 and sometimes 12 depending on the day. I have stock degrees on my irons so my p is 47* and my 4i is 24*. They list the 3i at 21* which is the reason I have the hybrid. I usually find myself driving the ball at around 290 occasionally Ill put it 300 maybe a little more if I really lay into it.

Sorry I haven't given all my information, I never really used this account when I created it last year and just logged in for the first time since then, this week. I normally play down in South Carolina at Daniel island but I also play in Palm Springs in California (I have family out there)

I would take the 19 degree hybrid,4 iron and gap wedge out. Add a 54 sand wedge. I find less is more. Too many clubs to many decisions.

no offense but almost assuredly your average drive isn't 290 yards, but if you're even close, hybrids are almost a complete waste. I average 265 or so off the tee but my driver is currently my weakest club. I find almost no need for even my 3 hybrid now as the ball gets up too high with that club so it's no more effective into the wind on a 220 yard shot than say a 4i or choked down 3wood, I still carry it but often wonder why and don't know what i'd replace it with as almost all cases around 200-220 i just seem to pull out the 4i now.

i'd recommend

driver

3wood

4-pw

50 or 52 (my rocketbladez use a 50) then 55/56 and a 60.

then just have some rotating clubs depending on how you're feeling, the course, what you're working on, etc. maybe a flop shot club like a 64 degree, 5 wood, etc.

You're hcap 10. Drive the ball 290. 290 is pretty tour distance already. Which only implies that you're loosing shots from poor approaches. So. If you can get the ball to probably 240 with a 3 hybrid then you should be at 230 with the 4i. If I were you, I'd dump the hybrids. Yes both. And get more club at the bottom. Honestly. When do you get to use your 3 wood and hybrids. Only the par 5, maybe the stretchy par 4s and perhaps to reach some doglegs. You're not going to be needing to hit 250 many times in a round. Get more scoring clubs

    • On my car I got the extended power train warranty. I do read the fine print most of the time. Though at now 37, my eyes aren’t what they were 10 years ago.    The problem with most of these extended warranties on electronics and appliances is you don’t register the warranty with the place you buy the warranty from, which I’ve always found strange. Unless it’s GameStop then you know Alina drops her Switch in the next two years and the screen cracks they’ll replace it. No questions asked.    You buy a slow cooker at Walmart for $50 and the extended warranty is say $6, you have to go through a third party to register your product for the warranty, and it’s pretty damn annoying. Target is the same way. Anything you buy the extended protection on you have to go through a third party.    Why do retailers go through a “broker” for warranties? Because they don’t wanna deal with it? They make me talk to someone from another country, that I can barely understand, when I need my warranty fulfilled.   Sorry for the rant.
    • You may be able to find a regular flex Blueboard on the second hand market. I’m little more than half your age so I swing a shaft that launches pretty low so I don’t have a lot of experience with Regular flex (other than when I try to hit it I miss way to the left).    There are other shafts, such as the newer Ping Alta that I’ve heard good things about. And one that no one talks about. The Jupiter shaft. You can get this shaft for a $100 with a grip and your Ping adapter installed. I was talking to the golf manager at Dick’s Sporting Goods here and he has one in his driver and has nothing but good things to say about it. I thought about getting one for my Paradym Triple Diamond to play it a little shorter, but haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

    • Meanwhile, another old Tour Edge guy switches to Callaway for this season. I have a different problem, course dependent set-ups. What I’m wondering is if @dragonsmhas the 8 iron set 5-PW, AW, GW or just 5-PW, GW. Because the PW is 42°, AW 47°, and GW 52°. Because that could potentially be a gap there. The 5-iron to 6-iron length jump is 5/8” instead of 1/2” so you should be careful of that.    @WUTiger the problem most people have with 3-woods is they don’t play them far enough back into their stance. And they usually don’t have enough loft and the shaft is too long. So 3HL, 4 or 5-wood is probably better for most golfers. I do the “Frankenwood” approach. I have both the 3+ and 5 woods. I typically will either add two degrees to the 3+ on 6600 yards or longer courses, or take a degree off the 5-wood on shorter courses than 6300 or so, and use the 5-wood shaft for both. I don’t usually find a situation where I need both the 3 and 5 wood on a course. I don’t play from 7000 yards it’s no fun. Edit: I mostly agree with @WUTiger on the gapping, although a lot of the newer even fixed hosel fairway woods are made better than what we had when we were playing the old Exotics XRails.
