I was at GG the other day, and the guy actually said I could step up from the stiff flex, to extra-stiff based off of their data. They handed me a funky looking 7 iron with a clipped on thing that measured my average clubhead speed at 91 mph.

No clue what my driver speed is. That was just swinging the one club 4-5 times.

Is there merit to this, or is he just trying to make a sale?

I think he is.  Wait a little bit until you have settled in to your swing changes, because you are probably over swinging a bit right now.

I would agree with Cipher and be hesitant that he's likely trying to make a sale.  For the record, though ... I have an 86-ish mph swing speed with a 6-iron, to go along with a 107-108-ish swing speed with my driver.  And I use (and love) an X stiff shaft for my driver. (Stiff for everything else) So if his 7-iron doohicky is actually accurate, it could be possible that you might like an x stiff driver shaft.  I'd still wait though.

I was recently fit by a certified Ping club fitter.  With the Mizuno shaft optimizer (I believe that is the funky clipped on thing) my swing speed with a 6 iron averaged 91mph.  After many swings I was fit into a new set of G25 irons with the CFS X-stiff shafts.

Driver:  the search continues
Fairway Wood:  Ping G25 3W Tour stiff
Hybrid:  Snake Eyes Q4U 19*, 23*
Irons:  Ping G25 5-UW w/CFS X-flex  (on order)
Wedges:  685BX black 56*      Putter:  Wilson Staff 8882

Umm ... Fate?? I'd suggest you go somewhere different (if possible) and see if you get the same results for the fitting. That way you'll be 100% you have the right equipment for you.

Yeah, I just don't know of anyone else in the area. :/

Either way, I'm out a driver for a while. My game is probably better off without it, so I may just hold off on a new shaft for the time being so I can avoid temptation and horrible scores from OB shots.

I just don't know how it snapped...it's like a month old. :/

Hey, I'm just telling you what the little doo-dad on their club said.

I was swinging great that day...simulator had my 5 iron at 215 yards, and the tape showed 6 hits in a row on the sweet spot. Can I do that in a round? Nope...more like hit fat and off the toe about 72 yards to the right.

That there son, is called range golf. You always hit the ball perfect on the range, get out to the course, and chunks, slices. Crazy game.

Yeah, I knew something was off...driver sounded weird and hit even worse. There's a 240 yard flag out that and I hit a good swing, and it was probably 20 yards short of that pin...I was thinking "WTF is happening right now?" Next swing, bye bye driver head. lol

Thanks you just made me spit up my drink all over the computer screen. LOL

My driver did the same thing, but I was playing at a course, that was next to a road. The damn driver head ended up on the road. I barely found it, no one saw it fly away.

    • Yeah.  As far as remaining still, I was thinking body rotates around the spine like an axis.  Instead of pivoting, some like me, sway, come off that axis, leave weight on back foot, etc.
    • I apologize on behalf of… idiot men. Sorry about that. Next time, tell the guy to shut up. 😛  Day 553, May 8, 2024 18 holes from the whites with @rwolfe. Windy AF today, but hit some good shots. Slid back a little from where I was the previous two days, but… I can get it back. Made a pretty nifty birdie on 12 from some pretty odd places. 😄
    • The angles look fine. Get as much light as you can on the area — you want the highest shutter speed you can get. Less blur.
    • Snap @ Tour Spoon! Birdied 11 yesterday. Hit a poor iron ,stopped on edge of bunker , pitch with my lob wedge landed about 6’ away and went in. Only 12 & 14 to go, long par5’s into the prevailing wind. Might be waiting a while although I did have about 15’ on 12 after the birdie on 11, didn’t miss by much.
    • Tested the Maxfli TourS yesterday. Compared to my former ball, the Titleist AVX, I got an extra 10 yards off the driver and half a club (5-7 yards) off the irons. The combined extra yardage from the driver and fairway wood meant that on par-5s where I usually hit an 8-iron third shot, I hit a PW. It's just a smidgen softer than the AVX and seems to spin well. Some of the reviews indicated a low ball flight, but I did not notice it. I also did not observe any problems with the paint quality, which was an issue with previous Maxfli models up to and including the U series.  My previous round I tested the Bridgestone E6, a two-piece ball with a different cover. It was OK; the same distance and feel as the AVX but with less spin.
