I shot my first under par 18 today at Copper Creek.  33-34= 67 (-2) from the blue tees (1 up from the tips I normally play 5517 yard, 64.8/113).

16 GIR (official, plus 1 fringe), 33 putts official (34 actual with three 1 putts and one 3 putt).  Other than the 3 putt, I liked the way I hit everything EXCEPT for the shanked 9 iron that led to a double bogey 5 on 17.  The wind had been gusty all day and I never got comfortable with the shot.

Gorgeous day in the mountains with hardly a cloud in the sky- too bad it was closing day for Copper (but understandable considering we had a 1.5 hour frost delay due to overnight temps in the 20s)

Congratulations!

Thanks...I remember you telling me that it wouldn't be long.

I know this is something you are looking to do- it might not feel the same if you were to play an easier course like I did, but I think it is something you should consider- do it once on an easy course, then the next time you get in that situation on your regular course, you might feel more comfortable closing the deal.

Big congrats!! With how stringently you follow the rules I am surprised you found 3 people to play with as indicated on your scorecard.

Just kidding.

Awesome round bro.  Don't fret over it not happening on a tougher course, you've still got to hit quality golf shots for 18 holes regardless.  Cheers.

Shooting under par from 5500 yards on a course rated less than 65 with 113 Slope gets nine exclamation points? Congratulations! Be sure to start a thread the next time you hole a five foot putt.

No point getting into it with someone like this

Congrats - I don't care how long or difficult the course is.  It's a victory in maintaining the effort for the full 18.

(I have a few 5 foot putts I've been proud of - depends on the difficulty of the putt)

I meant to try something like this to gain confidence.  But in my case, Murphy's Law is likely to take cover.  If I find the easiest rated course andy play, I will have my worst round of the month.

Much better qualified than other bragging posts I've seen.

Props on your great round! I couldn't see all the ratings on your scorecard, but it looks like you played to about a 3 handicap. That's pretty damn good for a 6! Also, I've never played a course under par, but no matter what the rating, would think it'd be pretty cool. I occasionally play the white tees at my home course. They are par 72 with a rating of 69.7 and a slope of 121. You can damn well bet I'd be stoked as hell if I shot a 71 from them!!!

That'll screw up your handicap to start next season.  Nice round though, anyway.

That's the beauty of golf Phil- I can be totally pumped about shooting 2.2 over the course rating, another guy can be proud to break 90 for the first time where you, as an internet advertised +3, would have to shoot 57 to be just as happy with your round.  With 30 years teaching experience, I am surprised that you don't realize that different players have different standards as to what they consider a very good round for them.

You said you were looking for the next big thing- anytime you want to come up to CO, let's put a wager on you shooting 57 or better for 18 holes at Copper Creek.  You told me you are not the real Mac O'Grady, so as long as you are not a current/former tour player, I'll even give you odds and agree to cover all your expenses if you do it.  (If you are a tour player, I'll still make the wager with you, but can't give you odds, etc).  Or better yet, why don't we randomly pick a handful of your current students- you give me $___ for each shot they shoot over 67 and I will give you the same for each shot they shoot under 67.

I agree with this.

I can (and others probably as well) take satisfaction from just one good shot, even if I shoot a bad round.

BTW the odds appear to be about 121:1. That's for a tournament, of course, so perhaps as low as 100:1.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
