Did I break my driver?

I went to the range today after work and, when making a rehearsal swing with my driver, I discovered that the mat wasn't as far from a metal column as I thought it was :-( This hit the column during the backswing portion, and was not at full speed (not even at *my* full speed). I was able to hit a few good drives after this happened (and a few good ones before), and then put the club back in my bag. At first, I thought I only chipped the paint. On the way home, I started to have a doubt. Now I'm not so sure. If you can tell by the picture, and let me know one way or the other, I'd appreciate it. Alternately, if there's some way I can find out if I've hurt it, let me know what I need to do. It's not dented in; it looks like the side of my former car did one time when I didn't know the boundaries of a garage as well as I had thought over a dozen years ago. Only more concentrated. I have two tournaments coming up in the next week, and I can put an older driver back in the bag if I need to do so, although I've lately grown to really like this one. But if this has caused me to have modified it in some way that makes it either undesirable (or against the rules) to use on the course, I'll accept that consequence. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Most are sealed. It will sound different, hit different. The bottom part looks like titanium and the top part carbon fiber. Maybe you just bent it but it kinda looks like a hole.

Hard to tell from the pictures. Is the paint just scraped off or is that a hole in it? :bugout: If that's not an obvious hole, and I wanted to check it for a crack I would weight it down in a bucket of water for a while and see if any water is seeping in.

It's definitely not a hole... a (very) little flattened in the area is all. I might try that. How would I know if any water is seeping in? Might I damage it if it's still good by doing this? Thanks to both of you for the feedback, by the way :-)

Thats a good idea. If water gets inside you will hear it sloshing when you swing, and bubbles should rise when its underwater. Who knows you may just end up with a tiny bumper sticker!

Thanks to both of you for the feedback, by the way

If water is seeping in you should be able to hear or feel it sloshing around and/or see some air bubbles forming along the crack when it's under water. No you won't damage it because if it's cracked there isn't a way to fix it anyway (that I know of). Maybe it's just the paint. As far as it now being a non-conforming club because of the damage: Maybe one of the "rules guys" here on the site can answer that one for you.

I held it under water for a few minutes and didn't see any bubbles coming up. So hopefully this means it's okay. I'll give it another shot at the range before taking it on the course, just in case. Thanks again for the help!

From the photos it looks like a hole but you confirmed that it isn't. Since you've got 2 tournaments coming up, is there a club you would be willing to pull out of your bag and drop your backup driver in its place in case the club went south while you were gaming it?

My initial plan was to just drop down to the 3W if that club went south during the round... but now I'm thinking now I'll pull the 4-iron or 5-Wood or something. Thanks for the suggestion!

Either warm up the club head and dunk it in cool water, or cool the head and then dunk it in warm water.  If there is a hole or a crack then one of those options should result in bubbles as the temp inside the head tries to normalize with the water temp.  I had one driver head with a suspected crack, and the temp differential water dunk confirmed it.  If the club head and water temps are similar then there may not be any bubbles.

Submerge it in water and let it sit. Look for bubbles. Take it out and see if there's water in it. If it performs then don't worry about it. Just because it may be cracked doesn't mean it won't work.

Update: played today, hit the driver 15 times (only three par-3s at this course). I had two bad drives, both from bad swings. I also had some amazing drives. So I'm going to speculate that the driver isn't broken. Thanks again to everyone who offered the advice on checking in on it.

Ok dont tell us if it works better or we will all be out there bashing our drivers into walls. Well...maybe we will borrow a buddies driver, but drivers bashing is ugly, ya know?

      I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.

      The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
