Question about the rotation of the body on the backswing . . . .

When you take the club back, what are you you feeling when you rotate back?  I have struggled in the past with swaying, which negatively affects my ability to shift the weight forward on the downswing.  I also notice that when I rotate too much from the glutes, I tend to open up too much.  I seem to get better results when I turn the upper torso back but do so in a way where I can feel the hips rotating (but just the hips, not the thighs or glutes).  In fact, I need to feel that same hip rotation on the downswing.  Some of my worst swings come when I either fail to rotate all the way back or when I rotate back but then stop the forward rotation and just let the arms come sweeping through on the downswing.  The best swings occur when I focus on making sure that the hips fire through on the downswing.

Should I be focused on the hips or should they be more passive?   It's easy to say that what you're doing is working at any given point in time, but the danger is that your timing may be good that day (or just lucky).  I don't want to ingrain bad habits.  If there is one thing I've been searching for in my golf swing, it's the mechanism that drives my swing.  And it's been a long struggle finding it.

For me, I try to turn my back towards the target. The rotation of shoulders and torso automatically rotate hips the right amount. I don't think you should try to turn the hips intentionally.
