I'm going to be in Norfolk next weekend and we're going to try and golf Saturday.  Anybody know a good, reasonably priced public course in the area?

EDIT--Newport News area as well.

Hi Aguirre,

I live in Norfolk. Norfolk in itself may not be best (there are a few) but Virginia Beach and Suffolk has some good ones:

VB (all of them appx. $70):

Heron Ridge : Very playable, fun course.

Signature at West Neck: Upscale feel course, decent layout

Virginia Beach National (Formerly TPC Virginia Beach).

Suffolk: Riverfront - $60. This is a little Tom Doak gem. Every hole is different, and the greens are very undulating. A thinker's course. Not too far from Norfolk downtown (just across the Mid-town tunnel and few miles out). My favorite.

In Newport News, I would suggest:

Newport News Golf Club - Deer Run ( not Cardinal!).

Of course Williamsburg (30+ miles north) has quite a few great ones.

Thanks.  I just found out minutes ago that we're probably not going to get to play because my buddy's wife is making us return on Saturday because Sunday is mother's day.  Which is a bullshit thing this generation of women does to men.  I've had it out with a couple of girlfriends who had kids before over this.

V hit the nail on the head and I agree with the whole post.

VB National, Heron Ridge, Signature at West Neck, Riverfront (Great course)  -   You're not going to go wrong with any of those.  Personally I'm closer to Riverfront so I'm a little biased.  Another Suffolk Course that's good is Nansemond River but may be a bit further from Norfolk.

Portsmouth/Suffolk area here V.

In the bag:  R1 Diver, Rocketballz 3 tour spoon (13*), Adams A12 pro 18* hybrid, 4-P Callaway Razr x black (dg s400 shafts), 50* & 58* Ping Tour S, and TM Ghost Manta Putter cut down to 32". and my Tour V2 Rangefinder (with extra batteries of course)!  Ball - Srixon Z Star XV

Cool. Nice to know a fellow TSTer this close. Where do you usually play? Gotta hook up sometime. I play Cypress Point a lot too since close to where I live.

LOL! What can I say man, I am one of those 'men' myself. My wife's usually pretty cool though. Good at picking my battles though.

I'm a Portsmouth guy.  I'll play Bide-a-Wee on Fridays for the mixer (short 9 hole best ball tournament for $20 starts at 5:30p).  They usually pay the top 3-4 teams in gift certificates so it makes it fun and relaxed.

I played with a group in VB last year (which should be starting again soon).  We switched it up between VB National and Heron Ridge.  It's usually 12-16 of us.  I'll also play Suffolk, Nansemond River, Sleepy Hole, Riverfront.   I bounce around a lot.  I've played Cypress Point a few times but don't get out there often.  Playing Cypress Creek on the May 9th Best Ball, Sleepy Hole on the 19th Best Ball and again at Sleepy Hole on the 22nd for best ball...   then I'll be broke again :)

We should definitely play sometime - I'll let you know when we start the VB group - they usually get a few players cards and it runs us about $45 for a Sat or Sun morning round if I remember correctly.  (we then thrown $10 in the pot for CTP's and skins but that's it).

Actually - i'm sure you have other things planned for a friday, but if not, Bide-a-Wee is right through the tunnel from Norfolk.  As I mentioned in the post above they have a short 9 hole best ball tourny for $20 every week.  Starts at 5:30 and done and out of there by 8:15pm.

Sure thing. I work  5 mins from Bide-a wee and have played there a few times. May be I can try the mixer on Friday eve. Are you playing tomorrow?

Have to sit tomorrow out.  I was supposed to play Sleepy Hole in a Best Ball Tournament but I think they postponed it for weather.  Supposed to be 30 mph gusts and rain.

I'm not trying to tell you where go...         Seriously though, Heron Ridge, VB National and the Signature at West Neck are all good courses - You should enjoy any of those...

Co-worker played a tournament this last weekend at Riverfront and he said greens are rolling!!! If you go there bring a backstop for your putts..

We ended up playing Norfolk News Golf Club at Deer Run, as suggested.  The greens were fine but the course was a bit baked out, which seems odd for May.  Lot of tight lies that my buddy (an occasional golfer who bombs the ball and could be pretty good if he had the time to play & practice) had real trouble with.

I didn't love the layout from the tee.  Several holes where driver was taken out of my hand.  Even a solid length par 4 (#14) which had a mild left to right dogleg but trees hanging out over the fairway.  I said **** it and tried to hit a low driver.  It worked.  Heh.

Tight course.  Not what I'm used to playing on the coast.  I had to pitch out four times.  I hit the ball like shit but scraped together an 84.  Slow round.  Took almost five hours.  The twosome in front of us joined up with a foursome and played as six, and kept up .  They were waiting as much as my friend and I.

Highlight of the day was on the Par 3 12th, where I hit a fat block (left hander) and ended up in the hazard about 25 yards short of the pin.  The grass was thick but I said to hell with it, opened up a 60 degree wedge, hit a blast shot that ended up about eight feet from the pin and sunk the putt for a great save.  Oh, I also birded #2, when I stuck a PW from about 115 to six feet.

On a busy Saturday, they actually had the halfway house closed.  I mean, wtf.

Good price, though.

BTW, we took the cross Virginia route and avoided DC, yet it still took 9 hours to get there.  I mean, I can make it from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach in 10 hours.  64 is a ****ing nightmare.  And Norfolk's restaurants are like shut down by 10pm on a Friday?  This is like the Outer Banks.  Boooring.

Anyway, I did get to sleep in a guest house by myself because my buddy's girlfriend is rich.  Like, not wealthy.  But rich.  Like her family is worth $300 million rich.

  • 2 weeks later...

Granby street for nightlife in Norfolk  I don't go there much anymore but it wouldn't be shut down at 10p.  Virginia Beach is only minutes from Norfolk and has plenty of places to go to at night also.  I haven't played Deer Run in years.  If you're ever down this way again aim for Riverfront, Nansemond River, or one of the VB courses like Heron Ridge, or VB national.

83 isn't a bad round on a course you've never played.

300 million rich........  nice... lol

P.S.  64 sucks!  WIlliamsburg & Newport News area can be a pain if there is an accident...
