Apologize if this has been discussed but I couldn't find anything on the search. I'm playing with a regular Friday 5some. The indexes are roughly 3.5, 7, 9, 10, and me @ 12. We are trying to put together some sort of points system playing various dot games each week. We have been playing where we all get our pops based on handicaps. I was thinking that we should be playing off of the low index. So if I'm playing as a 14 and the low index is playing as a 4, I get pops on hardest 10 holes. The 9 pops on the hardest 5 holes, etc. It shifts the holes where I get help from the "middle" 10 holes to the harder holes. I don't know that there is a "right" way to do it but what do you guys think?

USGA has some good reading material on handicap allowances.

Depends on the games you are playing.

Typically you are looking at finding your handicap for the course you are playing, then using something like 80% of that.

Try playing Stroke play one week then Match play the next.

Alternate back and forth through the season and record the results.

If everyone breaks even at the end of the year, then throw a party.

If someone wins all the money, then "winner buys the beers" for the party.

Golf is fun when there's always a party down the road .... :beer:

In reading my post, I think I wasnt clear w my question. The way we do it now, we all get strokes on the X hardest holes (where X is your course handicap). So, on the #1-4 handicap holes, we all get strokes (so nobody strokes). On 5-7, everyone but the 4 strokes, etc... I think we should play off of the low index, meaning the high cappers stroke on the hardest holes instead of the medium holes.

The way you are playing (based on my understanding of your game), is correct.

It changes with match play.

EDIT--Explain your game more clearly.

@TheSoss

Yes you can have various games with full course handicaps and yes you can play off the low handicap player in your group.

It really depends on how everyone wants to play the game and what type of game being played.

Some games are played with half strokes on holes, others play only receive 80% of handicaps.

Games are various all over the world along with setting parameter of types of game.

Bottom line is the choice of the group.
