I've been Playing Golf for:

My current handicap index or average score is: a lot :(

My typical ball flight is: high and slice

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: slice

Three things:

1. Sorry for a bad first post. I'll create a thread in the welcome section soon

2. Sorry for it being in slow-mo - maybe it will help though?

3. Sorry for a crap angle, I was doing all I could with the tools provided to keep my phone standing up

My issue: 99% of my drives go right. I used to have an out-to-in swing and an open clubface. This video it seems like I have a good clubface, but still goes right. Just looking for tips to get the ball moving straight. My irons do the same thing. Not really sure how to correct out-to-in as I'm not sure if it's in my rotation, my wrists, or if I'm just pulling my arms in.

I will get another video next week from different angles and so that you can see my arms and FULL backswing

Thanks for the feedback, even though it may be limited due to lack of good video.

Welcome to the site. Your swing is very "armsy", you basically lift the arms on the backswing which causes you to swing across the ball on the downswing. You need to get your body, torso and hips, more involved in the swing.

Good thread for you to check out.

Thanks for the reply! I'm going over that whole thread right now. Hitting the range today or tomorrow so I'll read up on this and get to practicing. Will try to get a better video as well.

Me again.

Old video was deleted, apparently. Anywho, I started taking lessons. Instructor has totally switched up how I grip the club, and even where I place the ball (more towards my back foot, generally)

Here's another video of my swing in slow-mo. Notice right at ball contact you can see it heading off to the right. I see in this swing that my left arm is bent too, which is not good.

My instructor has been having me practice my follow through also, apparently I bring my arms in upon my swing. Even thinking about that and trying not to do it, I still manage to.

I still have a pretty armsy swing. I notice next to 0 hip movement. Does anyone have any other drills I can practice, or any advice on this swing? I need more hip rotation, but.. how? Whenever I try to add that in, it just feels unnatural... almost like I'm forcing it. I've improved quite a bit over these last few weeks with an instructor, and I've gotten better at hitting irons and not topping the ball. But the slice is still very much apparent.

Thanks guys

You need to work on turning your hips on the backswing. Which will also help you turn your shoulders. I recommend getting a driveway marker and putting it through the front two loops in your pants and turning until it points to 45 degrees. At the same time turn hold one driveway marker and turn 90 degrees with the shoulders. Right now you just raise your arms then throw them at the ball.

This video is about driveway shoulder pitch, but I think you can get the idea.

I can't thank you enough for this post. I did some research on that, and compared my current swing to that of a correct one. For the first time since I've started golfing (2+ years ago), I hit a majority of a large bucket of range balls straight and even slightly left. My driver is still horrendous, but I'm focusing almost explicitly on my irons right now, mainly the 7 iron. So I'm ok with that right now.

New vid of progress below. I was by myself this time, so rather than someone holding my phone I was using something to prop it up. You can't see my arms that all well. But you can see quite a difference in my swing compared to the previous video, mainly with the hips and rotation.

I am very happy that the tip helped. The new video though isn't all that helpful in seeing your swing though. I'd recommend you invest in a tripod to properly hold the camera while you swing. It is really going to be worth the investment.

You can get a gorilla pod like this one and attach it to your bag.

    • Of course there's not a simple or knowable answer here. But the whole Caitlin Clark phenomenon is a nice example IMO. Suddenly there was wall to wall media coverage and national attention and... the women's tournament got similar ratings to the men's and much higher ratings than the men in the final four. With every indication that there will be some portion of the uptick that remains going forward. And there's the whole element that Sue Bird brought up. That basketball needed a pretty enough white superstar guard. One who looks like the "cute little white girls" that describes most of the soccer USWNT that's been able to achieve much higher popularity than any version of women's basketball, which is dominated by black players and none of any race who could be described as little... I do think women's sports are in a good place to start taking off more though. It's really only in the coming 5-10 years that the majority of girls will start to come of age with post Title IX grandmothers (as in their grandmothers were allowed to be serious athletes). I don't follow men's or women's basketball much, but in golf for sure the women's tour has gotten much deeper over the past 20 years and only looks to keep going in that direction. I've heard the same about women's basketball. And the patriarchal attitudes that socialized girls out of sports and everyone out of women's sports fandom aren't gone but have def diminished.

    • I have nothing to add other than I freaking love her swing and I think she's hot as hell and some of my golfing buddies disagree so I fought them
    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
