On Ice's "who has your vote" thread somebody said that 95% of Golfers are Republicans. I wanna have a Sand Trap straw poll. . . for better or worse.

I vote on principle. That means Republicans about half the time and Democrats...never. I'm a registered Republican, but that was only so I could have voted for Ernie Fletcher last year (governor of Kentucky).

This thread should be 'Are 95% of North American golfers republican'. As, what constitutes a republican is different here (Ireland) than there.

So I won't vote.

Lol...good point, Geezer. Guess we should instead ask if you're a Royalist, or Orangeman, or whatever

My own (US) political stance is waaaaaaay left. Think Eugene Debs, the Wobblies, and all that. That's me. Unfortunately, since voting for third party candidates are tantamount to flushing your vote down the toilet, I tend to vote for the next closest option: Democrat.

And then I drink a lot to cope with the inevitable disappointment(s)....

Half-hearted +1: I agree with the sentiment, if not the passion. Though I wouldn't describe myself as waaaaaaay left, I think of myself as a pessimistic liberal. (But I do work in a bank for chrissakes, so I'm probably not as much of a leftist as my conscience would like! And I remain undecided about Mr. Debs!)

I have never voted for a Republican and cannot imagine a scenario in which I would ever vote for someone who has thrown their electoral lot in with them. So, I vote for Democrats. (Gag reflex currently working.)

Another reason to change the drinking to 18, or even 16. That way, the 18-21's can drink, and then go vote, and not care about the results...

Lol...I'm old enough that the drinking age was 18 when I was growing up.

Of course, growing up in an Italian household made that detail merely a point of academic interest. Vino and grappa were on the table at every meal later than breakfast, and all were allowed to partake regardless of age. And strangely enough...not one of us emerged from that constant exposure as an alcoholic. Go figure.

In Vino Veritas, baby!

I am about as far to the right as possible on most issues, although I do not get caught up in the religious right . (Sundays are for football and golf.) I think that it would be safe to say that republicans outweigh dems on the golf course. That would be really true in most country clubs. It is an expensive sport that has for years been dominated by business men, ala republicans. With the resurgence in the youger set taking up golf I would think the pendulum would swing slighty more to the middle.

There's a good quote:
"The man who is not a socialist at twenty has no heart, but if he is
still a socialist at forty he has no head”, -Aristide Briand

Which means its easy to want to give away stuff when you have nothing but it gets a lot tougher later on when you have gained some wealth.

So you have to be a republican to be a business man? News to me.

Lost Ball sees more Democrats on the course than Republicans

Either way, Lost Ball deals with many more Independents these days as dissatisfaction grows with politics
Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad.

Just to clarify, I am NOT NOT NOT NOT Unionist or an Orangeman. Don't go there people! I am a Nationalist and pure green (and not in the environmentally friendly way)

As for cheap golf in the states. I have no Idea. But I know the course I currently play is fairly good value, and fairly crap too! And I've heard some petty outrageous quotes for membership across the pond. So I'll make no assumptions! But thats off topic.

Though I am a registered Democrat, I have voted Republican in my local elections. As I get older my social views have gotten a lot more conservative and I have always been a fiscal conservative. I find myself shut out by the democratic party because of it's turn to the left. I haven't seen a candidate from the them that is moderate in a long time so I don't think I will remain a Democrat.

Heh...try me. Let's hear it (in private if you'd prefer.)

Lost Ball sees more Democrats on the course than Republicans

I find the opposite, sort of. The people in my area are very conservative-leaning (the golf course is a place for me to get away from emo kids, people who haven't showered in months, gays, hippies, feminazis, and generally everyone unpleasant and undesirable to be around with. Really, I'm ashamed and sickened to be a part of my generation.) although I don't see many of them being too political.

I know for a fact Kentucky has more registered Democrats than Republicans...I just prefer to say people on the course are pretty non-political. The golf course is a place to get away from all that for four hours, after all.

    • I’m not sure I agree. It’s just what the majority find more entertaining. Most people prefer women’s gymnastics over men in the Olympics. How much hype is there with the men’s compared to the women’s? I bet you can rattle off several big names in women’s gymnastics and only a handful of men. Women’s tennis …same thing. And sure enough, their purses are the same. However, WNBA, awful…LPGA, not near as much interest than PGA. Don’t think it’s really that complicated IMO.
