My wife and I went out tonight and at dinner she says, "I bought you something." I wasn't sure what she was talking about and then she said, "How about some Titleist 735 stainless with Dynamic Gold S300s?" I almost fell out of my seat. I have been drooling over these for a bit and now they will be here tomorrow. I have a great wife. She thought that it was time to replace the trusty 845s that I got in 1992 from a buddy that was playing on the Tommy Armour Tour back in the day. I think she was right and with the help of my friend she found out what set I was obsessing about.

I have just one dilemma. I need to adjust the lofts slightly to get my gaps right and of course put the lie up one degree.

The lofts are 47-43-39-35-31-28-25-22. I know that I want to start PW-8, 48-44-40 to mesh with my wedges of 54, 60. I am not sure where to go from there. I am thinking 48-44-40-36-32-28-25-22. This only increases the loft from the 6i to the 5i from 3 to 4 degrees which seems pretty reasonable and they are what Titliest puts on the their top line blades. Of course I could split hairs and make the 5i 28.5 and there would be 3.5 degrees on either side. Any input is welcome! I will give a full report about the new sticks after a few rounds, but I will tell you that I am very excited about having blades that morph to cavity backs.

First I am SOOO jealous of you, I LOVE the 735's, but on the topic since you was to keep your wedges- 8 consistent why not the whole set? Before I got my blades I had the same wedges but Callaway X-18's and I can tell you that the inconsistent gaps made distance control hard. Now my blades have 4 degree gaps through the set. My distance control is soo much better I feel like there isn't a distance where I don't know what club or 2 clubs to choose between on ANY shot. So I would suggest 4 degree gaps between irons through wedges, mainly just because then distance control is easier.

Here's what I play:

Thanks...

Well I didn't really know why Titleist drops from the five to the four by only 3 degrees. They obviously must know something. The old set up that I have been using was: 60-54-48-44-40-36-32-28-24-21-18 Not much different and I found my distances to be very predictable. The old irons were 1/2" long (they were my friend's specs), but I measure standard to 1/4". My wedges and woods are all standard length, no mods except for 1 up. I match perfectly to the S300 profile and have them in my wedges. Thanks for the replies!

don't forget altering the loft will alter the bounce, but if you're talking about 1-2* it will probably not matter. Congrats on the new clubs... I got mine just after New Year, and I can't wait to play them some more. You live in Florida, so I guess you won't have to stare at them and wait like I have been all month. I did get out twice so far this month, and I'll probably get in about 6-10 rounds while on vacation next month. You will enjoy those 735's my freind has them and I have hit his, they are nice.

Like you, I have a great woman. She recently gave me the go-ahead on a new set, which also replaced my 845's from 1992!

Enjoy the new set.

"How about some Titleist 735 stainless with Dynamic Gold S300s?"

Anything special about the Dynamic Golds? They're an option for me for my next set, and my current set is Royal Precision Rifle. I'd be using R300s if I were on Dynamic Golds. Any particular reason you like these shafts?

I am thinking 48-44-40-36-32-28-25-22. This only increases the loft from the 6i to the 5i from 3 to 4 degrees which seems pretty reasonable and they are what Titliest puts on the their top line blades.

I like that spacing and numbers; it resembles what I'm converging to on my next set. My numbers are going to be a bit off from yours, but the lofts are one off for most of the clubs (except my "PW" will be 45. That's just how that set comes. But the loft and distance matter far more than the label)

I am very excited about having blades that morph to cavity backs.

Yep. I think the sets that do that are far cooler than the sets that integrate extreme cavity back to medium cavity.

An aside question - what's with someone else buying your clubs? Are you more or less clear for standard length and lie? Or did she just give you a go-ahead?

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

No on the go-ahead. She had my friend email me and ask me what clubs I liked. He pretended that he was going to look them up and go to a store and demo them. He was real convincing because he has been looking at irons for a month and I totally bought into his BS. I told him what I would get and he just forwarded the email to my wife. She ordered them yesterday and they were here today. I was hoping she was going to give me the green light, but she beat me to it.

I took them to my club guy and confirmed the standard length and I had the lie adjusted upright about a degree. My club guy set up my lofts 47-43-39-35-31-27-23-20. He said that he likes to work off the pitching wedge and that since I am going with a shorter shaft than what I had on the last set that I should be pretty close to the distances that I was familiar with, maybe a hair less. He did increase the gap to four degrees from 6-5-4 irons because that is standard and that three degrees is not enough with those clubs. He told me to play them and let me know in a month if we need to adjust. Like most sets, I was glad I took them in because the clubs did not come out to spec on both the lofts and lie. Then again, I have never seen a set that did.

Regarding the shafts, the Dynamic Gold S300 is just a solid performer and has been a staple in the golf industry for the last 15 years. It has a higher kick point and keeps the ball flight a little lower then most.

I went to the range today and even though it was blowing about 20 and I had to hit off dirt, the first time through the clubs was good. I hit some really crisp shots and when I got the 5 iron I just pured it. That shot reminded me of a set of forged Hogans that I had back in 1990. I soon got tired and proceeded to lay down some poor swings but remarkably the clubs had more forgiveness than I thought they would especially in the short and mid irons. The 3 iron behaved like a 3 iron with moderate forgiveness, but then again they are not known to be forgiving, plus the offset is smaller so I will get used to that.

The best part was the pw and the control that I felt with that club. I was able to control the distance well. This is critical because I do not carry a gap wedge and I rely on this club a lot. It is a major improvement over the 845 pw.

Yep, I will play them for a month or so and see how the distance goes. I just realized that they are set up identical to my old set up one degree stronger but now with standard length shafts so I am probably going to wash which would be fine with me. The only thing I am not crazy about are the velvet cords, but I will give them a month too and if I don't like them I will rip them off and put the tour wrap on.

Thanks guys.

Ever since I saw the 735s, first in a review on this site and then, in the Pro Shop at my club, I have always thought they were among the best clubs I have seen. It is always fun to get a new set of irons. Congratulations! Enjoy! Share with us, when you can, your experience with the new sticks.

Well, I played today and hit some nice shots. I tell you that playing the forged irons you know exactly where you hit the ball on the clubface. They are about 3 yards stronger (8-P) than the 845s so I got used to the distance. Surprisingly they were more forgiving than they look. I do not like the grips, they are the velvet cords, and are harder than I like so I will be changing the grips for Tour Wraps next week. I never have liked cords before and I have confirmed that I still don't like them.

I am also going to bump the lofts up to what I have been playing with for the last 16 years (21-48) because the 3 iron at 20 degrees is 2 degrees stronger than spec and I think is into -1 bounce range. I know that one degree is probably more mental, but I want that 6 degree gap back form the pw-sw which I let my club guy talk me out of. If I use my specs then there will not be any clubs off the spec by more than one degree (which is what Titleist recommends for custom ordering), right now the 3 and 4 are strong by 2. I figure the pw and one degree will put me right on the money for what I have been playing with for the last 16 years. I compared the shafts of my old clubs and they are just a hair taller so I think I am on the right track.

My club guy knows that I am mental and he is just has to get over that. He works with golfers, he should understand. LOL.

Tour,

There's nothing like having a great wife who participates in your golf passion.

Congrats on the irons, I think your fitter did the right thing. If anyone knows your game, it would be him. I'm sure that once you start playing the distance gaps will be zilch. It's just a matter of finding your comfort zone.

Enjoy the set!

Update:

I put the lofts on how I wanted and everything is good. I hit some balls today and I was hitting the center of the club face more consistently than I have been lately. I don't know if it is the smaller club face or if I am just concentrating more. I practiced some knockdown wedges and felt great control on the pw. I am still adjusting to the lack of offset in the lower irons, but I still hit some shots with those clubs. I finished with a four iron on a string that landed next to the 200 marker and some guy said, "that was nice"...and I thought to myself, "yes it was", but only said "thanks". It felt great.

I also practiced some chipping with the blades and hit the stick the first shot with the pw and then made the first one with the 8 iron.

I am definitely in the honeymoon period. I will update this post after next weekend's round.

Be very careful when you adjust the lofts. Titleist doesn't like to move lofts more than 2* (or is it only 1*) and lies no more than 2* either direction for lie.

Go to the Titleist website and find the total stock specks for the clubs. Realize that an adjustment in loft has an EQUAL change to the bounce angle. Making your irons eithe too strong, or too week will change the bounce angles so that they irons will have a dig sole or a sole with possibly too much bounce. (Detrimental when playing on hardpan!)

Enjoy the clubs, and don't get too crazy when adjusting the lofts.

I didn't go crazy. I went 3-4 one strong, 5 the same, 6-pw one weak. 48-44-40-36-32-28-24-21 versus the stock of 47-43-39-35-31-28-25-22. This gives me the 48-54-60 at the high end and spreads out the 6-5-4 a little more.
