Hi

I’m after some advice please. Can anyone tell me if you need high or low bounce on wedges when pitch shots from 100 yards and under please?

I’ve got 50, 54 and 60 degree wedges so also curious what clubs people use for their pitch shots!?

Thank you

Bounce is your friend in all situations, especially pitch shots. Think of is as a bumper that helps prevent your leading edge from digging in the ground. I prefer a lot of bounce, but all some relief on the back side. Edel wedge have a lot of bounce, but the sole grind allows you to open up the face and still keep the leading edge low.

Both sites below talk about bounce in their designs.

Edel Wedges are designed & manufactured from the ground up. Proper bounce & sole design make our hand-ground wedges perform where it...

Titleist, Ping, Callaway all have similar grinds, but a little less bounce. So I would try out higher bounce designs with some sole grind relief.

I have a high bounce SW and a low bounce LW.  I use them depending on lie.  When I have some grass underneath (ball sitting up) or am in the sand or soft surfaces, where I want to get under the ball and don't want the club to dig, I choose the high bounce.  On hard pan surfaces and where the bounce can cause the club to ride along the ground I prefer low bounce

Bounce lets the club hit the ground with a designed surface meant to let the club glide forward from the momentum of the clubhead. If you hit the ground with leading edge, especially if you have a steep pitching motion, then you'll end up hitting fat shots. A properly designed sole will allow the club to glide under the ball. It basically gives you a ton of leeway.

Also, a static bounce number it's not the entire picture. You need to consider your pitching motion, are you opening or closing the clubface, and the geometry of the sole. You can have 25 degrees of bounce, but with different geometry designs the club will act completely differently.

Don't fear the bounce.

Finally, It's a myth that you need low bounce for tight lies. Again, design of the bounce matters. My clubs have something like 16 to 20 degrees of bounce. I can even open the clubs up (adding more bounce), and get under the ball on a tight fairway.

All of my wedges (Vokeys) have the maximum bounce offered, though the 3 wedges have 2 different grinds.

I can, and have, hit them off a paved cart path...

FWIW the crappy way to "fake" high bounce (with trailing edge relief) is to have a wide sole.

So, yes, out of sand, a 6° bounce wedge with a wide sole and little relief can behave about as well as my 17° bounce 54° wedge with trailing edge/heel/toe relief, but in almost all other situations… it doesn't behave as well. It's not as versatile, and any more than 6° forward shaft lean exposes only the leading edge.

That's one of the biggest reasons I really dislike Vokey wedges. They're almost all lower bounce, wide sole.

    • I am in the market to buy a new or mint+ used driver. I am a high handicap player that usually uses Regular Flex Men's 10.5 degrees and I golf right handed. I can't shot shape the ball and have trouble always hitting the ball in the center of the face and it usually goes off to the right and out of play. I am trying to hit straight all the time so I can hit more fairways, also on off center shots I would like the ball to be in play so I don't sacrifice strokes all the time. I usually look for forgiveness, distance a little distance lost is ok if I am hitting more fairways then that is what i want, adjustable or non adjustable is fine, price is also a factor around 100 but under 300. I also need help getting the ball in the ball in the air and going higher. Any recommendations or other help when buying a driver are welcome and thanks
