I moved down here about 3 months ago. I haven't played since the New Year (studying for Bar Exam). I played Kizer a few times (which I like...as a Muni), Falconhead once (amazing) and Blackhawk (disappointing). Thoughts on other courses? I need to try out Lions Muni, but I'm weary of the alleged 6 hour rounds.

Get yourself down to San Antonio and check out The Quarry (9 holes are inside an old quarry, the other 9 is so-so), Brackenridge (a great old muni), and Ft Sam Houston has two 18s that are pretty challenging.

Besides golf San Antonio is always a good time!

When I was living down there I always loved playing The Bandit. It's between San An and Austin, toughest course in the area in my opinion. Austin courses were just too pricey for me.

I haven't really played any courses in the area since moving here but I joined up at Star Ranch in Hutto. It's a pretty nice course and the price is right. I also played at Tera Vista. Nice course but not for what they're charging.

FYI, Star Ranch has a deal called the Star Players Club. $34 a month gets you unlimited range/practice facility access, free access to all of the clinics, and cheap twilight rates ($12 after 2pm, includes cart). It's on my way home from work so I stop just about everyday to practice my short game. Best money spent golf wise ever for me.

Kizer and Riverside are good.

Falconhead is a beast, sometimes you can find a deal there too.

My dad raves about the quarrey in SA, i have not played it.

lions is great weekday its a fun course.

wish I could help more.....Austin needs more places like Falconhead.

semi-private type things.

Circle C golf course is a good one outside Austin.

I have to disagree with the person who said The Bandit is a good course. Maybe I just had a bad experience, but that place is overpriced and the pro (the pro 3-4 years ago anyways) isn't the brightest bulb....

I haven't played Jimmy Clay (in the same complex as Kizer), but they just finished an overhaul (new greens, re-working holes 5/6/7). It's supposed to be in good shape.

Lion's is a cool old muni. Sounds like you already know to not play it on the weekend though. Riverside used to be good (and you get to see Harvey's old house) but the maintenance was going to crap last time I played it.

I've played Shadow Glen a few times and thought it was decent. Falconhead is much better.

I thought Forrest Creek was alright for the price.

My suggestion is you tell your wife/girlfriend/partner/significant other that you want to take them to the spa at Barton Creek. That would allow you to get a round in on one of the courses there. I love the Fazio Canyons course.

Riverplace is another good option I forgot about. About the price of Falconhead.

Check out golf512.com for decent deals. That can get you on to LiveOak and Yaupon as well.

Any of the above allow walking?

Any opinions about Lago Vista or Avery Ranch?

Thanks.

I've been going to Florida to get in snowbird golf for years and have neglected Austin. I'm going to Austin more often, although the weather is more unpredictable in March, the weather this weekend was awesome, though windy.

Played Yaupon twice, Oaks and Falconhead since these courses were 10 minutes from my hotel, Lakeway Resort, which I highly recommend. The greens were punched at Falconhead, but it's a great layout. Yaupon is short, but hilly. Both Yaupon and Oaks could have used a little shave on their fairways. They alos both allow walking and offer unlimited range balls (which I took advantage of). Tried to play the Bandit, but booked solid.

Oh man you know that Austin was voted the best golf city right?( I don't remember what Mag. but I read it somewhere)

I play Forest Creek a lot......another very nice course is in Bastrop called Pine Forest...it follows the Col. river with granite faces litterd throughout the course. Some tee boxes are a good 4-5 ride in the cart from each other.

I usually go play 2 a week...let me know if you want play a round....I used to live in Ballard, Skykomish....nice up there

    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
    • I saw this comment made in a golf article... "Most golfers stand over a 4- or 5-iron still negotiating with themselves. They think about how hard to swing, whether they have the right club, if they have the aim correct and more. It’s a lot to deal with and long irons punish the “half-in” golf swing." I am not sure the "most golfers" is correct regarding the bolded part. I can understand if there is a bunker, water, and/or OB that a lot of golfers would be fixated on that. I am not sure that leads to ending up more times there. Pending your level in golf, the variance is so large in outcomes, it could be just with in the expected outcomes. I can understand if have a big lake on the right side of the hole being one of the most terrifying shots for right-handed amateur golfers.  I am not sure many golfers are standing over the ball talking to themselves, "Ok, maybe I should step back and pull the 4-iron. Am I lined up right? Oh, the wind came up, should I swing harder? What am I going to have for dinner tonight, maybe steak. (Joking, somewhat 😛)" A question is that how much chatter do you get while standing over the ball. Are you questioning the everything about your golf shot?
