Another issue I have found with greens with lots of hills/valleys, it that it is quite common for longer putts to have more than one break.

The golfer could be reading from in back of their ball, see the initial break, think that's it, and putts. Once ball travels through the initial break, another break may take over. This leaves the the golfer scratching their head, and having a "wth" moment.

This is one of reasons it is always a good idea to read the green from behind the hole too.

I walk around the back of the hole 360° to check out just that. I do it fast and I do it while others are lining up their putts or between putts.  I don't recommend this for slower golfers or Bryson Dechambeau.

    • Sure, but how was your alignment? 🙂 Day 53 - 2024-11-22 Mirror work after getting back home. Wife is a superstar for her career/job/whatever.
    • I would say your back nine is the second nine you play that day. It's part of what makes getting some of those holes tougher. Or, if 18 holes are played pretty often, out of A, B, and C, and you often play A and C, A is the front and C is the back, regardless of the order you play them in. That way not birdieing C #7 isn't overcome by birdieing the easier A #7 on a day you played it C-A instead of A-C. But, at the end of the day, nobody really cares except yourself.
    • Day 128: played 9. Nice little even 9, with 2 birdies and 2 bogeys.
    • @DeadMan, I think your approach makes sense. As @dennyjones said, consistency is the key.
    • Day 204 (22 Nov 24) - Weekly men’s group round today.  Temps in the upper 40’s, WNW winds 5-15mph - was the old man in the foursome (next youngest is my junior by 10yrs) - held my own against them.  Iron play getting more consistent -seeing predictable ball flights and distances. While the consistency coming around still had sone solid negatives as I had two dbls and one triple. On the plus side - eight pars and one birdie.
