I've been Playing Golf for: 7-8 years (1 1/2 consistently on weekly basis)

My current handicap index or average score is: 23 (range between 91-95 consistently) Think it should be said I have never hit a birdie and that is my goal for this season.
My typical ball flight is: driver: baby draw or  baby fade or massive slice
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: driver/wedge play

I don't currently have any videos yet, just looking for advice for what to work on when at the range if I give you some info and detail. I tee the ball high and let it fly with my driver. I have a short backswing that helps me play the baby draw into my swing because last year I really really sliced the thing and would shoot 100-115. I've since dropped that to the 91-95 I am at now and am quite happy with the progress I've made. Sometimes with that slow short backswing I try to compensate for that and swing really hard and it just slices, I know whats wrong it is just a matter of being able to understand what I need to do when getting on the tee box.

With that I've really started to struggle with short irons and even my wedges. This never used to be a problem. within 100 yards from the green I was able to get it on and 2 putt. Now I'm thinning it and chunking it and just not what I want to see. My friend (who is currently an 8 handicap) told me that since I have that slow tempo in my head for the driver and sometimes overcompensate with swinging hard, I'm now swinging back the club fast and forward even harder and thats why I am mishitting.

I'm not sure whether this is correct or not but I would just like some advice from you guys out there on what helped you or what you think could help me.

Thanks guys

How can anyone even begin to help you without it?  What you think is happening and the truth are often not the same.

If there was no advice to be given, better left unsaid. I was simply asking for things to work on at the range because "I don't have any videos YET" so that when I go to the range I know what might be the cause of certain things if detail was given and then later in the week videos are posted.

Thanks for the comment though.

I know what you said, but what I said still remains. No one can even begin to help you. There are many factors to look at in a golf swing. Strike, face to path, angle of attack, dynamic loft, etc. Then there’s what you are doing in the swing to bring about your delivery of the club, not to mention the fact that we soften don’t feel and what is real.

Post a video when you can. There’s a lot of pros and better players with swing knowledge on this forum.

But how can we tell you what to work on if we have no idea what your swing looks like?

That would be like going to see a golf instructor for a lesson and asking him to diagnose your swing and tell you something to work on before you even hit a single ball, it just doesn't make sense.

We have an instructional content section I recommend you look at. There is a lot of information and drills to look at. It can be a bit of an overload though. The 5SK Video thread has a lot of drill videos.

That being said, a video can help a lot. Many of us, including me, were reluctant to post a video. But everyone here really wants to help. Some things can be spotted right away and are easy changes that can help immediately. And filming your swing is the quickest way to see changes and convert what you are feeling in your swing to reality.

Even if you have someone hold an iPhone and film, it can be enough. The link below discusses the angle to film. Slow motion helps too.

Thank you I will definitely take a look, as for a video. I will post one as soon as I'm at a range and if my next round is before I am at the range I will post one from there. So right now it is looking like my next round is sunday, and being a 20 year old working 2 jobs I have 1 day I have a 25% chance of being able to go to the range, so I will post as many videos as I can come sunday

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the advice.

Pay attention to what your misses are when you play and not just ball flight, but fat and thin shots, etc. Also, if you are playing with someone you know, have them stand behind you and look at start direction and curve. Knowing this can help a lot. It is harder to do that by yourself.

I will definitely do that!

    • If you own a Stack radar (for now, it's limited to Stack radar only), and want to work on your wedge game… it turns out that wedge distances are 99% correlated to ball speed. So, with a small radar, you can practice your wedge game easily in a gamified way.
    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
