Not surprising, and I would expect a similar trend in many sports. The players have better understanding of the game and swing at an early stage now and resources to groove them into winners. The digital aids in high-speed cameras and launch monitors makes it easier to analyze the swing and make appropriate changes.

I agree. The quality of instruction available today is so much better than when I was coming up. My folks couldn't afford lessons, so I was left to figure things out pretty much by myself, with aid from Golf Digest. My Uncle was a country club pro before WWII, and I would pick his brain like crazy when we could get together. which wasn't often. 

He played in some Tour events in Pennsylvania, back in the day when the bulk of the field was made up of "Monday qualifiers".
