Hi there, to give a little background to my problem i will start with why it is cracked and then ask the question.

I was at a driving range and took my driver out, unforunately in England grass driving ranges especially in winter are rare, so it was an indoors driving range. I took a swing with my driver and it smacked against one of the updright metal poles supporting the building! I was NOT very happy at all, what kind of driving range has mats wehre a driver cannot be swung properly!! Anyway, i took a look at the back of the head where it had collided and it looked scratched, but there was no dent or abvious break.

Next time i cleaned my driver i dunked it in water and saw bubbles fizzing from the impact area, and sure enough there is a crack in the back of the driver! Ever since it happened i could have sworn that the driver does not feel correct, when i hit a drive it feels as if it is hit very high on the club face and really vibrates and wobbles, but when i look at the mark, the contact is dead centre!

My question is whether this crack could have damaged the integrity of the club, hence what i am feeling, or whether it is my mind playing tricks on me!

Thanks for your help

I've cracked a driver below the heel. It didn't really affect the performance.
I think you have some problem because there is water in the driver head?

A crack in a drivers head is not a good thing. It can reduce the trampoline effect that the club has on the golf during impact robbing you of distance. It just like if you manage to cave a head in (in essence you have started to sink the clubs ability to produce trampoline effect). I would consider call the manufacture and explaining your situation, you may be surprised they might work with you. Taylor Made is really good about that kind of stuff.

A crack will certainly hinder the performance of the club due to the fact that the club is made of such thin metal, any crack will likely propagate (get larger) the more you hit the club.

Thanks guys, i'm fairly sure there isn't water in the club as once i had washed it i left it grip down and no water came out of the end of the grip as one would expect. I am making a trip to the national custom fit centre next week and will have to see what they think. I really wasn't sure if it was my mind playing tricks on me or not, but it seems like it isn't. I am playing a round today and will report back with some more feedback!

This answers the question for me. This just doesn't happen on its own. I'm afraid that it is...New Driver Time! Good luck.

Tourspoon is right, IMHO.

If your driver has a hole in it big enough to take on water, it's done.

Well to report back, i have actually played 2 sets of 9 holes over two days, one shooting a 36 and the other a 40, both of them i used the driver quite a lot, and to be honest, it felt ok, on the first hole a 315 yard par 4 i was pin high with my drive.

I do however feel that it may start to feel worse as time goes on and the crack gets worse!

I only skimmed the thread so not sure what brand the driver is, but almost everyone I know who has cracked a driver has contacted and sent it back to the manufacturer who replaced it with the most current model equivalent. You might try that route and with luck have a new driver in your bag.

If I shot 76 over my last 18, I would cross the driver bridge when I came to it.

IMHO, it will eventually break. I would definitely keep my 3 wood in the bag until then.

IF your driver is cracked it is as good as worthless. It will never perform as it was originally intended. I just had a ratteling noise in my Ben Hogan driver and called Callaway (they own Ben Hogan now). Without questions they sent me out a new Big Bertha 460 (they didnt have any more of my driver in stock). If your driver is the Nike in your signature I would be shocked if Nike didnt do the same thing that Callaway did for me. Please keep us posted on what happens. It is always nice to know what companies have the best customer service.

I think I am going to crack my driver and see if I get similar results! Shooting 76 with a 315 yard drive is some serious golf.

To be fair the wind was a little behind and it was a very inviting shot!!

I will send nike an email, do you think they will consider it even though it was "my fault", even though the driving range was to blame?

Im with some of the guys > a crack cannot be a good thing. sure you may get away with it, but eventually what little structural integrity (and ultimately the performance of the club) will fail.

unfortunately, i would recommend a new driver (after letting the driving range know what happened of course)

Callaway never asked me a single question about my driver. For all they cared I could have ran over it with my car. I think Nike will make it right for you. The golf equipment business is far too competitive to have unhappy golfers using their equipment.

Well some good news,

I had a club fitting today, at the national custom fit centre at the belfry, and while i was there i asked the fitter about the driver and he said that unless there is a deformity, eg a dent, the club should perform just fine, and we proceeded to test it on the launch monitor and my stats were pretty much spot on,
12.3 degree launch with 2200rpm spin and 270 carry.

Did treat myself to a new BV 56/10 tour chrome wedge
