Hello,

I have just purchased a new set of irons, Mizuno JPX 919 Tours, of which I am very excited about. I have only hit the 7 iron during the fitting and out on the range, so I am waiting to get rest of the set in so I can hit the others (they’re still shipping). However, I have jumped the gun a little and started thinking about the wedges I want to play, and through my research I have come up with this set. Assuming distances are equally gapped, I would like thoughts on the loft/bounce/grind combos I have selected. Please let me know if you’d say these wedges seem to be versatile enough for most common scenarios, but can still give me opportunities for various skill shots. Thanks!

PS - I am an 8-10 HC if that affects your response!

Hello and welcome to TST. I’m sure you’ll be very happy with your Mizunos. Wedges are probably the most feel club golfers have aside from maybe their putters. Depending on how you plan to use them I think your selections are fine. I prefer more bounce with my lob wedges ( 60*) but you may be fine with the 60*/6*.  None of my wedges have a bounce less than 8*. I think you’ll particularly like the 56*/14*.

Let us know how your first outing goes with your new clubs! Cheers!

Wedge specs are really dictated by the golfer's swing, preferred short game style, and course conditions. Not knowing anything about your game other than your a 10, those specs seem pretty reasonable. The grinds aren't of much concern to me unless you are playing on some really tight surfaces or really hilly. I don't know if you need the C grind on that 60 as I'm not sure how often you plan on really opening that club up and Mickelsoning it. I usually vote for more bounce and less grind for most people as a rule but everyone is different so you have to weigh the pros and cons.

Thank you both for your input! The 60* would be mostly for tight lies near the green or on the fringe, thats why I opted for such low bounce. In regards to my swing- it’s fairly steep, miss hits are going to be fat, I almost never hit it thin or blade it. However, as I move closer to the green I try to come in more shallow.

@Vinsk thank you for your warm welcome!

@Adam C the 60 would be more of a fun club for me where I can try more specialized shots, you know we all try to mickelson it every once in a while 😉

I’m a fan of more bounce. Bounce is forgiveness in a wedge. Tight lies aren’t an issue with the right grind.

    • Day 322: did the yardstick putting drill for a while. Gotta feel like I’m pulling the putt to keep it online. But good work at it.
    • Given that I am an 8 and halving it would go to a 4, I don't really see the value in it.  Even if I went from a 16 to an 8, it wouldn't be much use.  I would definitely pick option 1 of a flawless swing, because that is more likely to help lower my score far more
    • There you go. Very simple stuff there. You have the videos in CoachNow, too, right?
    • Yeah. Nobody looks for a thing to "blame" for a good shot — they just give themselves all the credit. 🙂  They could have had the worst mental game/pre-shot prep in the world… but they'll skip over the post-shot evaluation. I know for a fact I've hit great shots thinking "oops, head dipped a bit, don't chunk it!" mid-swing.   Not really, because all that really might matter is the actual moments you're swinging the club. I disagree, unless your definition of "a lot" is wildly different than most everyone's.
